Share

One person has died while 18 others were injured after a matatu lost control and crashed at Kikiini area along the Kikima–Machakos road in Makueni County.

The vehicle carried passengers from a wedding in Kyuu and was heading back to Nairobi when the accident occurred. Police say the crash followed the detachment of a front wheel, which caused the driver to lose control.

Confirming the incident, Mbooni West Police Commander Benson Makumbi outlined the scale of the casualties.

“One person has been confirmed dead and 18 others injured after a matatu they were traveling in was involved in an accident following the detachment of a front wheel,” Makumbi stated.

He explained that the vehicle had been privately hired for the event before the fatal return trip.

“The matatu had been hired in Nairobi to transport passengers attending a wedding ceremony in Kyuu. The accident happened while they were returning to Nairobi,” he added.

Overloading Raises Safety Concerns

Makumbi also revealed that the vehicle exceeded its legal passenger capacity, raising fresh concerns about compliance with transport regulations.

“The matatu, which has a capacity of 14 passengers, was carrying more than the permitted number,” he said.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and moved the injured to Mbooni Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, authorities preserved the body of the deceased at the facility’s mortuary.
