8 Dead After Truck Hits Tuk-Tuk on Mwea–Embu Highway

Eight people have died and three others sustained injuries following a tragic road accident at Murubara along the Mwea–Embu Highway in Kirinyaga County.

Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal confirmed the incident, stating that all eight victims died on the spot after a parcel truck rammed into a tuk-tuk at Murubara.

According to police, the parcel truck was travelling from Mwea towards Embu when it veered off its lane and collided head-on with the tuk-tuk, which was heading towards Ngurubani. The impact also hit pedestrians walking near Murubara.

At the time of the crash, the tuk-tuk was carrying farm workers travelling from Kimbimbi to the Mwea Irrigation Research area to plant rice.

Casualties and Injuries at Murubara

Authorities confirmed that five of those who died were travelling in the parcel truck, while two were pedestrians and one was a passenger in the tuk-tuk.

Meanwhile, emergency responders rushed the injured to hospital and doctors admitted two victims at Kimbimbi Hospital, while they referred another with serious injuries to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital for specialised treatment.

Police arrested the truck driver, who sustained minor injuries, and launched investigations into the cause of the Murubara crash.

Preliminary reports from residents suggest the driver may have lost control while trying to avoid potholes near Murubara.

Authorities later moved the bodies to Kerugoya Mortuary, where families will identify them before postmortem examinations.

Gachagua Condoles with Families of Victims

Reacting to the tragedy, DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua condoled with families of those who lost their lives in the Murubara road crash, saying he received news of the incident with deep pain.

“I have learnt of the tragic road crash at Red-Soil along the Mwea–Embu Highway with deep pain this morning. My heartfelt sympathies go to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who have lost their lives,” he said.

Meanwhile, he extended his message to those injured in the crash, noting that they remain in his thoughts as they undergo treatment.

“To those receiving treatment in hospitals, I wish you a speedy recovery. My prayers are with you. May God grant the bereaved strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace,” he added.

Series of Deadly Road Accidents

The latest Murubara crash adds to a growing wave of fatal road accidents reported this week.

Earlier, another accident claimed 11 lives, including three students, at Lessos Junction along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway.

The crash occurred on Thursday, July 30, when a trailer collided with a 14-seater matatu.

The collision left several passengers injured, prompting emergency responders to rush them to Burnt Forest Hospital and Plateau Hospital as rescue teams worked to free those trapped in the wreckage.
