Former Lugari Member of Parliament (MP) Cyrus Jirongo has passed away.
Jirongo was killed in a terrible road accident early in the morning of Saturday, December 13, involving a bus and his Mercedes-Benz car in Naivasha.
Reports indicate that he was driving himself to his rural home in Lugari when his vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Climax Coach bus along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Sarah Chumo confirmed that Jirongo died following a head-on collision on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka confirmed the demise of Cyrus Jirongo in a statement on X.
“Death has robbed us one of our greatest sons. Rest in peace, Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” Lusaka said.
COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli said he received the news of Cyrus Jirongo’s death with shock and sadness, describing him as an asset to both the community and the nation.
He added that while Jirongo was deeply loved, God loved him more, and prayed that his soul rest in peace.
“This morning, with a lot of shock and sadness, I have learnt of the passing on of Cyrus Jirongo who was an asset to our community and Kenya. We loved him but God loved him more. May your soul rest in peace!” Atwoli said.

ODM Communication Director Philip Etale said “Oh NO. My friend Cyrus Jirongo. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.”
Presidential aspirant Reuben Kigame said he shared the news of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo’s death with a heavy heart, following a fatal road accident in Naivasha.
He added that he and others had seen the wreck as they drove past but did not know Jirongo was involved. Kigame prayed that God would comfort Jirongo’s family and friends.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the sad news of the passing on of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo following a fatal road accident this morning in Naivasha. We saw the wreck as we drove past there today, but did not know he was the one involved. May God comfort his family and friends,” Kigame said.

Cyrus Jirongo served as Lugari MP between 1997 and 2002 and between 2007 and 2012.
He also served as an assistant minister for lands.
Jirongo is widely remembered for the old Ksh500 note since his days at Youth for Kenya 1992 (YK92), during Mtukufu Rais’s regime.
In 2013, Jirongo expressed interest in the presidency but ultimately ran unsuccessfully for the Kakamega Senate seat, while supporting Raila Odinga in the presidential race.
He contested for the presidency in 2017 under the United Democratic Party but garnered only a small share of the national vote.
His party later joined the Azimio la Umoja coalition ahead of the 2022 elections, and after the election, he publicly congratulated President William Ruto.
