The East African Community (EAC) has reaffirmed its firm support for the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia aligning itself with long-standing African Union principles and the international law.
According to a statement made by the EAC Secretariat in Arusha on December 28, 2025, the regional bloc pointed out that Somalia is not a country but one unified state under the rule of its federal government.
The EAC made it clear that it fully recognises Somalia as one sovereign country dismissing any actions or narratives that may undermine its unity.
The notice said ,”the East African Community (EAC) recognises the Federal Republic of Somalia as a single sovereign state under the authority of the government of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
This statement strengthens the internationally recognised status of Somalia and solidifies the validity of federal institutions in Somalia.
The regional bloc also observed that its position was in line with the legal and political structure of the African Union, especially the Constitutive Act of the African Union and other decisions on state sovereignty.
“The EAC notes and aligns with the position expressed by the African Union as reflected in the Constitutive Act of the African Union and pertinent rulings of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.”
This agreement highlights the continental solidarity on the importance of honoring inherited colonial boundaries as well as avoiding disintegration of African states.

“In accordance with the Treaty on the Establishment of the East African Community, the EAC acknowledges the Federal Republic of Somalia with its borders inherited at independence.”
This statement echoes one of the fundamental principles of African diplomacy, which is to maintain stability and prevent border conflicts.
It is in this context that the EAC, in its final recommendations, called upon all stakeholders, both regional and internationa,l to work within the legal frameworks when dealing with Somalia.
“The EAC calls for respect for the unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and urges all stakeholders to act within established regional and international legal frameworks relating to sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.”
