CS Ogamba Confirms KCSE Release Date and Time

Share

The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results will be officially released tomorrow, Friday, January 9, bringing to an end weeks of anticipation among candidates, parents and schools across the country.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba will preside over the release ceremony in Eldoret at exactly 9:30 a.m., according to officials at the ministry.

The announcement will mark a key milestone in the academic calendar for nearly one million learners who sat the national examination last year.

The confirmation comes barely days after the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) activated its online results-checking portal, allowing candidates to prepare for access once the results are formally announced.

However, the council has emphasised that no results can be viewed before the official release by the Cabinet Secretary.

Results Portal Activated Ahead of Release

KNEC officially opened the KCSE results portal on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, at https://results.knec.ac.ke/, prompting excitement and confusion in equal measure among candidates eager to check their performance.

On the portal, KNEC placed a notice cautioning users against premature attempts to access the results.

“The 2025 KCSE examination provisional results will be available after official release,” the notice reads, underscoring that the system will only display results once CS Ogamba makes the formal announcement.

Ministry officials said the early activation of the portal was part of “routine preparations to ensure a smooth rollout once the results are declared.”

Nearly One Million Candidates Sat the Exam

A total of about 996,000 candidates sat the 2025 KCSE examinations across various centres nationwide.

The exams were administered between October 21 and November 14, 2025, under heightened supervision to curb malpractice.

During the examination period, 418 candidates were flagged for various irregularities, cases that were subjected to investigation in line with KNEC regulations.

The council has not indicated whether these cases will affect the overall release timeline.

CS Ogamba has previously reassured the public that the marking and processing of results were proceeding as scheduled.

“KCSE results have consistently been released in January, and this year is no different,” he said while addressing concerns over a perceived delay.

Marking Challenges and Certificate Reforms

The marking process faced a brief disruption on November 30 after about 800 examiners stationed at Maryhill Girls High School in Thika downed their tools, citing working conditions and communication challenges.

KNEC later announced that the issues had been resolved and that all examiners had been paid their dues.

In addition to the results release, the ministry has rolled out reforms on the issuance of KCSE certificates.

Candidates will now collect their certificates from sub-county education offices rather than former schools, a move aimed at ending the long-standing practice of withholding certificates over unpaid school fees.

KNEC has warned schools against retaining certificates for any reason, terming the practice “unlawful” and urging affected candidates to report such cases to education officials.
