Former Uhuru-Era PS Lands New Role at Kenya Airways

Former PS Esther Koimett, who served as the Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications within the Ministry of ICT, Innovation, and Youth Affairs under President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has landed a new role at Kenya Airways (KQ).

In a notice dated Tuesday, January 27, 2026, KQ announced that the former PS has been appointed as a non-executive director of the Company, representing KO Lenders Company 2017 Limited on the Board.

“The Board of Directors of Kenya Airways Pic (KO) hereby announces the appointment of Ms. Esther Jepkembai Koimett, CBS, as a non-executive director of the Company representing KO Lenders Company 2017 Limited on the Board with effect from 26th January 2026,” read part of the notice.

Kenya Airways Appoints Esther Koimett as Non-Executive Director 

The Board, which announced through the Company Secretary, Habil Waswani, said it was made pursuant to the Capital Markets Securities (Public Offers, Listing and Disclosures) Regulations 2023, promulgated under the Capital Markets Act.

Following her appointment, the Board congratulated her, expressing confidence in her ability to deliver in the role.

“The Board, Management and Staff of Kenya Airways Pic hereby congratulate Ms. Koimett on her appointment to this new role,” said the Board.

Koimett is a public servant with over 35 years’ experience spanning investment promotion, banking, privatisation, public enterprise reform, and public policy.

According to the Board, she has played a key role in the structuring and execution of major strategic transactions and initiatives undertaken by the Government of the Republic of Kenya.

She has served in various leadership roles within the Government of Kenya, including Principal Secretary, State Department of Broadcasting and Telecommunications; Principal Secretary, State Department of Transport; Investment Secretary and Director General, Public Investments and Portfolio Management at the National Treasury; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Information; and Managing Director/CEO, Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.

The former PS also has extensive board experience and has previously served on the Board of Kenya Airways Pic, representing the Government of Kenya. She currently serves as the Chairperson of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Renya Ltd, and is a non-executive Director at Car & General.

She holds a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA from the University of Nairobi, an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) Certificate from Strathmore University, and is a member of the Institute of Investment and Financial Analysts, Kenya.

Esther Koimett is the firstborn daughter of the late, powerful Moi-era politician and businessman Nicholas Biwott.
