The Kenya Red Cross Society has announced the death of its dedicated Aqua Rescue volunteer, Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila, who lost his life while responding to an emergency along the Mbabathi River.
In a solemn tribute shared on March 4, the humanitarian agency said it was mourning “the loss of our dedicated Aqua Rescue volunteer, Samuel Wanyonyi Wangila,” describing his death as a devastating blow to the rescue fraternity and the communities he served.
According to the statement, Wangila died in the line of duty while taking part in an ongoing rescue operation following a distress call at Highrise, where a young boy had reportedly drowned.
The organization paid glowing tribute to Wangila’s bravery and commitment, stating that he was among its most dependable and experienced water rescue volunteers.
“Wangila, who gave his life in the line of duty,” the Kenya Red Cross said, underscoring the circumstances under which he died.
For more than a decade and a half, Wangila was actively involved in emergency response operations across the country.
The organization highlighted his long service, stating, “For over 15 years, he served with courage and compassion, saving lives and mentoring others.”
He was described as a steady hand in high-risk operations, especially in water-related rescue missions.
His work went beyond saving lives to developing other volunteers through mentoring and hands-on training.

This is because Wangila was previously recognized at the Volunteer Awards and given a Special Recognition Award under the category of outstanding service in aqua rescue operations throughout the country.
The agency also recognized that Wangila’s dedication and commitment helped build stronger emergency response systems and enhanced volunteer teams’ preparedness and readiness to respond to distress calls and emergencies.
Wangila not only attended to distress calls and emergencies but also took his time to ensure that other rescuers were equipped with the knowledge and confidence needed during life-threatening situations.
The Secretary General of the Kenya Red Cross Society, Dr. Ahmed Idris, offered condolences on Wangila’s death to his family and friends and volunteers throughout the country.

As tributes continue to roll in, the humanitarian organization reminded the people of Kenya of the need to honor the memory of the deceased not only on the circumstances of his death but also on the circumstances of his life, which was devoted to the service of others.
“Rest in peace, Samuel. Your legacy lives on,” the statement concluded, affirming the fact that the deceased had left behind a legacy in the numerous lives he had helped save throughout his career.
Wangila’s death has once again brought into focus the risks that emergency responders take regularly, placing themselves in harm’s way to save others.
