Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has issued his first public message since assuming the country’s highest leadership position, warning that Iran will continue confronting the United States and Israel amid the ongoing regional conflict.
The statement was delivered through Iranian state media on Thursday, marking the first official remarks from Khamenei since he succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who had led the country for decades. His ascension comes during a period of heightened tension in the Middle East, with the region experiencing ongoing military exchanges, drone attacks and missile strikes involving Iran, Israel and the United States.
Observers note that the leadership transition to Mojtaba Khamenei occurred at a sensitive moment, as Tehran faces mounting international pressure over its military actions. Analysts say that his first message is an effort to signal continuity in Iran’s hardline policies and to reassure domestic supporters that the country’s defence posture remains firm.
“All U.S. bases in the region should be closed, or they will be attacked,” Khamenei said.
He also vowed retaliation for attacks carried out against Iran, emphasizing that the country would respond directly to its adversaries.
“We will obtain compensation from the enemy, or we will destroy its assets to the same extent,” he added.
These remarks underline Tehran’s determination to maintain its military operations despite international condemnation and ongoing tensions with Western powers.
Khamenei highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route that carries a significant portion of the world’s crude oil supplies.
“The Strait of Hormuz should remain closed as a tool of pressure.” He said, signalling Iran’s intent to leverage control over the waterway in ongoing regional disputes. Any disruption in the strait could have wide-reaching effects on global energy markets, raising concerns among international traders and policymakers.

The remarks come as the conflict continues to affect regional stability and international energy security.
