The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has strongly criticized the arrest and detention of veteran obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Job Obwaka, describing the circumstances surrounding his arrest as troubling and calling for respect for his constitutional rights.

In a press statement issued in Nairobi on March 14,2026, the union expressed concern over the treatment of the 83-year-old medical professional, who has served the Kenyan medical community for decades.

According to KMPDU, Dr. Obwaka was arrested earlier on Saturday morning,March 14, at his parking bay at the NSSF Building in Nairobi, where his clinic is located.

Following the arrest, he was transferred to Muthaiga Police Station, where he is currently being held.

The union noted that the circumstances leading to the arrest remain unclear, raising concern among members of the medical fraternity.

“KMPDU wishes to inform the medical fraternity and the public of a deeply troubling development involving one of our distinguished colleagues, Dr. Job Obwaka, an 83-year-old Obstetrician and Gynaecologist who has served patients with dedication and distinction for decades,” the statement read.

Allegations Against the Veteran Doctor

KMPDU said it had been informed that Dr. Obwaka is accused of falsifying the register of members, a responsibility that falls under the mandate of the Office of the Company Secretary.

However, the union questioned the basis of the accusations, stating that Dr. Obwaka was not present when the alleged irregularities in the records reportedly occurred.

“We are informed that Dr. Obwaka is being accused of falsifying the register of members… It is important to note that Dr. Obwaka was not present at the time when the alleged irregularities in these records are said to have occurred, raising serious questions about the basis and fairness of the accusations being levelled against him,” the union said.

Concerns Over Bail and Due Process

The doctors’ union also raised concerns over reports that authorities have declined to grant the veteran doctor cash bail despite the alleged offense being bailable under Kenyan law.

“Even more concerning is the fact that authorities have reportedly refused to grant him cash bail, despite the alleged offence being bailable in law, citing unspecified ‘instructions from above,’” the statement noted.

The union warned that such actions raise questions about due process and the potential misuse of state power.

KMPDU Demands Transparency

In its statement, KMPDU stated several demands to authorities, including clarification on the circumstances of the arrest and adherence to the rule of law.

“We stand firmly with Dr. Job Obwaka and demand that he be treated with dignity, fairness, and full respect for his constitutional rights,” the union stated.

The union further called on investigative agencies to act with restraint and professionalism.

“We call upon the relevant authorities to immediately clarify the circumstances surrounding his arrest and detention,” the statement added.

Call for Calm Within the Medical Fraternity

KMPDU urged members of the medical community and the public to remain calm while the matter is addressed through legal channels.

“We call upon the medical fraternity and the public to remain calm but vigilant as we continue to seek clarity and justice in this matter,” the union said.

The statement concluded with a strong message of solidarity within the profession: “An injury to one doctor is an injury to all.”
