Maseno University has over time developed a reputation as a cradle of talent, and its current and former students have become some of the key players in Kenya’s media, entertainment, and digital industries.
Situated in Maseno, 25 kilometres from Kisumu, this institution has grown from a humble beginning as a teachers’ training institution to become a full-fledged public university.
Formed in 1991 as a constituent college of Moi University, it was granted charter status in 2001.
According to its publications and records from the Commission for University Education in Kenya, this institution has over time expanded its course offerings in various fields of study, including arts, sciences, business, education, and information technology.
Currently, it is headed by Vice-Chancellor Julius Nyabundi, and it has always strived to become a “fountain of excellence,” a term that is commonly used in its branding and marketing.
Maseno University has developed a name for itself in the world of academics, but it is also known for being a force in the development of talents in the arts and entertainment world.
Many of the creative individuals we see on-air today, whether as journalists, performers or content creators, can attribute part of their success to their experience at Maseno University by way of its extensive support of the arts.
Equator FM (the University’s student-operated radio station) and the vibrancy of the University’s arts community provide platforms for budding journalists, musicians, performing artists, and other types of creative talent.
As an example, one of Maseno University’s alumni is Chemutai Goin, who became a household name during the COVID-19 pandemic through her on-air reporting of Kenya’s government press briefings.
Goin was employed as an on-air reporter at Citizen TV and is a good example of how Maseno University has contributed to the existence of mainstream media in Kenya.
Goin currently serves in the communications office of the speaker of the National Assembly.
In the music industry, Nadia Mukami (formerly Kanadia Katambe) has become one of Kenya’s biggest female musicians.
The “Maombi” artist began performing while attending Maseno University, when she also worked at Equator FM, thus highlighting the significance of Maseno University’s role in the development of artistic careers.

Content creator Vinny Baite, creator of popular viral videos titled “Jaba Stories,” has reached the highest level of success in this arena and has now partnered with Daniel Ndambuki, a.k.a. Churchill.
Baite also worked with Mediamax radio station Milele FM, before quitting to venture into growing his own comedy platform full-time.
Digital entrepreneur Levy King, a 2019 graduate of the institution, has made a name for himself in the field of online marketing and event management as the co-CEO of YMS Events Kenya.
He is currently working with various companies like Odibets under the influencer economy.
On Twitter, now referred to as “X,” Austin Shankie has gained a substantial following by posting tweets about digital income streams.
Hillary Komuono, famously known by the alias “Komuono,” has gained tens of thousands of followers by posting about relationships.
