The mystery surrounding the bodies that were discovered in a mass grave in Kericho County has taken a new turn after Nyamira County government distanced itself from 20 of the 33 bodies found, raising fresh concerns about who authorised the burials and how they ended up on private land.
Speaking to the media, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo clarified that the county only released 13 bodies for burial and followed the required legal procedures before the transfer.
He said the remaining 20 bodies discovered at the site are unknown to the county administration.
“We obtained court orders for the disposal of the 13 bodies,” the governor said, adding that the county is equally concerned about the origin of the other bodies.

Nyamira Governor Explains
The governor further revealed that Nyamira County had disbursed funds meant to facilitate burial arrangements at a public cemetery in Kericho. However, the bodies were instead buried on private land under circumstances that remain unclear.
“We gave money to be paid to Kericho County, but whoever handled the process made arrangements elsewhere,” he explained.
The discovery of at least 33 bodies, including children and adults, at Makaburini Cemetery shocked residents and triggered investigations by authorities after the number exceeded what had initially been authorised through court orders.
What Reports Indicated
Earlier reports indicated that only 13 unclaimed bodies had been formally released from a Nyamira hospital mortuary for burial after required legal clearance, leaving investigators puzzled about how the additional bodies ended up at the site.
This whole case has attracted national attention, and human rights groups and forensic experts are calling for transparency and accountability in the handling of the 20 bodies that are unaccounted for.

Postmortem Findings
Postmortem findings have shown that the victims died from different causes, including illness-related complications and injuries, suggesting that the burials may have occurred at different times rather than in one single incident.
For families with missing loved ones and even residents living near the burial site, the uncertainty has increased their anxiety.
As investigations continue taking place, authorities are under pressure to find out who authorised the burial of the additional 20 bodies and why the necessary procedures were not followed.
