In many relationships in Kenya, people follow a societal structure where men are typically slightly older than their partners.

These Kenyan couples have chosen to defy these norms and follow their own paths despite significant age differences.

Francis Atwoli, a veteran trade unionist and long-time leader of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions, married Mary Kilobi in June 2018.

Born in 1949 and now in his mid-70s, Atwoli met Kilobi while she was still a university student in Kampala, Uganda.

Their age gap of about 36 years has remained part of their public life. After nearly eight years of marriage, the couple welcomed their first son, Samuel Atwoli Jr., in 2025—a milestone they have shared publicly.

Guardian Angel and Esther Musila

Peter Omwaka, popularly known as Guardian Angel, and Esther Musila have one of Kenya’s more widely referenced age gaps in celebrity relationships.

When they began their relationship, Guardian Angel was in his early 30s while Musila was in her early 50s, resulting in a nearly 20-year difference.

They met through mutual social connections, and after dating for over a year, Guardian Angel proposed to Musila on her birthday.

Betty Kyalo and Charlie Jones

Media personality Betty Kyallo and Charlie Jones have been in a relationship that has attracted attention for an age difference of about a decade, with Kyallo born in 1989 and Charlie around 1999/2000.

Esther Passaris, born in 1964, had a long‑term relationship with businessman Pius Ngugi, who is significantly older.

Passaris and Ngūgi have two children together.

Late Johana Ngeno and Naiyanoi Ntutu
