World Athletics Makes Major Marathon Changes Affecting Kenyans and Global Runners

World Athletics has announced changes that will reshape marathon racing, a move expected to impact Kenyan athletes and runners worldwide.

In a statement dated Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the body said the marathon will be removed from the World Athletics Championships after 2029 and turned into a standalone annual event starting in 2030.

The new competition, to be called the World Athletics Marathon Championships, will feature men and women competing in alternate years.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said the move aims to elevate the marathon globally.

“Few events in sport carry the weight of the marathon. This is an opportunity to create a dedicated global championship for both elite runners and mass participation,” he said.

Athens has emerged as the preferred host for the first edition of the championships in 2030, with discussions already underway.

At the same time, the Athens Marathon The Authentic has been upgraded to Elite Label status, placing it among the world’s top road races. Organisers are now aiming for the highest Platinum Label by 2029.

Officials say plans are in place to improve the historic marathon route while preserving its heritage.

Impact on Kenyan runners

The changes are likely to affect Kenyan athletes, who have long dominated global marathon races and relied on the World Championships for international recognition.

With the marathon becoming a separate event, athletes may face new qualification rules and competition structures. However, the annual championships could also create more opportunities for runners to compete at the global level.

World Athletics CEO Jon Ridgeon said the move reflects the growing popularity of road running worldwide.

“The marathon is one of the most universal events in sport, and this plan ensures it gets the platform it deserves,” he said.

The World Athletics Road Running Championships will continue as a separate event.
