The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has congratulated the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) following the successful conclusion of its 2026 national elections, marking the inauguration of a new National Executive Council set to serve from 2026 to 2028.

In a statement released on April 20, 2026, KMPDU described the leadership transition as a significant moment in Kenya’s evolving healthcare landscape, emphasizing the need for unity and coordinated action among medical professionals.

KMPDU acknowledged the newly elected KMA National Executive Council, led by President Dr. Ibrahim Matende, alongside Vice President Dr. Charles Jakait, Secretary General Dr. Lyndah Kemunto, Assistant Secretary General Dr. Leon Gakuo, and Treasurer General Dr. Amina Guleid.

The union emphasized that the transition represents more than routine administration, but rather a renewal of leadership mandate within Kenya’s healthcare sector.

“We recognize this transition not as routine administration, but as a renewal of mandate within Kenya’s evolving health landscape,” the statement read.

A Shift Toward Unified Advocacy in Healthcare

KMPDU stressed that the era of isolated advocacy is ending, calling for stronger collaboration between professional bodies to address the country’s health sector challenges.

“The era of isolated advocacy is over. KMPDU and KMA shall prioritize structured coordination across three strategic fronts,” the union stated.

This shift toward unified engagement signals a growing commitment among medical stakeholders to align efforts on policy reforms and healthcare delivery standards.

Legislative Alignment to Strengthen Medical Practice

One of the key focus areas highlighted by KMPDU is legislative alignment, particularly in relation to existing and upcoming healthcare laws.

The union noted that coordinated engagement will focus on the Quality Healthcare and Patient Safety Bill (2025), the Health Act, and other statutory frameworks governing medical practice in Kenya.

“Unified engagement will ensure the law reflects the lived reality of the practitioner,” the statement said, highlighting the need for legislation that supports both healthcare workers and patients.

Safeguarding Workforce Integrity and Professional Standards

KMPDU also highlighted the importance of protecting the health workforce, describing it as the backbone of healthcare delivery in Kenya.

The union pledged to prioritize fair compensation, enforce professional standards, and uphold the dignity of healthcare practitioners across the country.

“The health workforce remains the core infrastructure of care delivery,” the union noted.

Oversight of Health Financing and SHA Rollout

Another major focus outlined in the statement is reform oversight, particularly concerning national health financing and the rollout of the Social Health Authority (SHA).

KMPDU said it is committed to providing joint technical and professional input to safeguard patient outcomes while ensuring healthcare providers are protected from administrative challenges.

“We commit to a joint technical and professional voice that safeguards patient outcomes while protecting provider dignity from administrative expediency,” the statement added.

Commitment to Collaboration and Professional Protection

KMPDU reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with KMA and other stakeholders to strengthen healthcare delivery and protect medical professionals.

The union concluded its message by affirming its commitment to action-driven collaboration.

“KMPDU affirms its readiness for collaboration anchored on outcomes, not rhetoric. Where there is a threat to the profession, we shall act as a shield. Where there is progress to be made, we shall act as a force,” said Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah, Secretary General and CEO of KMPDU.
