MP Jack Wamboka Suspended as PIC Chair Over Bribery Allegations

Bumula MP Jack Wamboka has been suspended as the chairperson of the National Assembly Public Investments Committee (PIC) on Governance and Education due to corruption allegations.

This decision followed complaints from witnesses who appeared before the committee.

According to officials, the complaints raised important concerns about the committee’s conduct of its business.

Many witnesses alleged that the chair demanded payments for accessing him or being favorably treated by the committee.

Officials stated the claims quickly attracted attention from regulatory bodies.

NCIC Officer Harassment and Bribery Allegations

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) sent a formal letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly.

This communication contained complaints regarding harassment, hostility, and demeaning treatment of its officers while appearing before the committee, and also an allegation of bribery demand by Wamboka.

Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss, in a message to the House, confirmed the suspension.

She said it was necessary to uphold public trust and the integrity of the committee pending thorough investigations.

She further directed that the Minority Party leadership should appoint an interim chair with immediate effect.

“Any leadership wrangles or suspension can negatively affect its oversight mandate,” Gladys added.

Allegations Against Wamboka

The PIC holds a pivotal watchdog function in the Parliament, monitoring the use of public funds and scrutinizing reports from state bodies.

The Parliament has since referred the allegations to the Powers and Privileges Committee for inquiry, and it is expected to present its report within 45 days.

Politicians on various platforms have called for utmost transparency in the matter and emphasized the need to respect due process.

Other politicians have called for quick action regarding the matter in the restoration of integrity within parliamentary committees

Wamboka had not responded to the claims as of going to press.
