Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced that a portion of the Nairobi Southern Bypass will be temporarily closed due to an accident involving road transport that happened earlier in the morning on Friday, April 24.

The section to be temporarily closed includes the Ole Sereni-bound carriageway from Thogoto to Dagoretti Interchanges, close to Karinde.

In an official traffic advisory, the authority confirmed the shutdown and warned motorists to expect significant disruptions along the affected stretch.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists that the Nairobi Southern Bypass (Ole Sereni bound), between Thogoto and Dagoretti Interchanges near Karinde, has been temporarily closed following a road traffic accident earlier this morning,” the statement read.

The incident has already triggered congestion across adjoining routes, with traffic spillovers reported in surrounding areas as emergency response teams and traffic marshals work to manage the situation.

KeNHA stated that safety and clearance operations remain the immediate priority.

Traffic Disruptions and Advisory Measures

Authorities have cautioned that delays will persist as efforts to clear the accident scene continue.

“Traffic delays are expected along the affected section, and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly,” KeNHA stated.

For motorists yet to begin their journeys, KeNHA issued a clear directive on alternative routing to ease congestion pressure.

“Motorists who have not yet commenced their journeys are advised to consider using the Kikuyu – Mutuini – Dagoretti (C63 Road) as an alternative route,” the advisory noted.

This diversion is expected to absorb part of the redirected traffic, although congestion along the alternative corridor is also likely.

Coordination and Continued Clearance Efforts

Moreover, the highways body urged motorists to cooperate during continued traffic flow management and removal of the barrier.

“Motorists are further advised to cooperate with traffic marshals and enforcement officers on site as clearance efforts continue,” the statement added, highlighting the importance of compliance in preventing further disruption or accidents.

KeNHA reiterated its commitment to restoring normalcy as quickly as possible, noting that teams are working continuously at the scene.

“KeNHA assures all road users that we are working around the clock to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists,” said Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli.
