The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has introduced new guidelines aimed at regulating the participation of journalists, editors, and media practitioners in elective politics ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 29, 2026, MCK said the measures are designed to prevent conflicts of interest, safeguard journalistic integrity, and ensure fairness in the electoral process, given their influential role in shaping public opinion.

“Unlike other professionals, journalists and media practitioners control the very platforms, airwaves, and narratives that shape public opinion and political discourse. This distinct power necessitates a higher standard of scrutiny and specialised protocols to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure a level playing field for all political contestants,” read part of the release.

MCK Unveils Ethics Framework for Journalists Transitioning Into Politics

To eliminate potential conflicts of interest,  MCK said it is finalising comprehensive Guidelines on Media Conduct and Reporting for the 2027 General Election.

The proposed framework introduces strict operational requirements for media professionals who intend to pursue political office, beginning with clear resignation timelines.

Under this provision, journalists and other media practitioners who declare political ambitions will be required to step down from newsroom duties and active media practice within specified deadlines.

In addition, the guidelines set out on-air suspension protocols aimed at ensuring immediate withdrawal from editorial and broadcast roles.

This means that once a journalist formally declares their intention to run for political office, they will no longer be permitted to host, anchor, or report news content.

MCK further revealed that the framework also outlines media house standards designed to safeguard fairness during the electoral period.

The council ruled that media houses are required to provide equal, balanced, and impartial coverage to all political contestants, without granting any undue advantage to individuals who previously worked within the media industry.

Support Programme for Journalist-Politicians

MCK also noted that national leadership benefits from diverse expertise drawn from different sectors, including law, engineering, and medicine, and added that media professionals also bring valuable experience to governance.

To support journalists who intend to transition into politics, the Council is developing a Special Governance Support Programme designed to equip media practitioners with leadership and policy skills necessary for effective political campaigns.

“We invite all journalists and media practitioners planning to vie for political office to formally register their intentions with the Council by emailing info@mediacouncil.or.ke.”

The Council noted that it will also hold a validation workshop with editorial leadership within the next 14 days to refine the proposed guidelines, with the final framework expected to be launched and gazetted within 30 days.
