DCI Sends Message to Kenyans Using Smartphones and Laptops

Share

Security of computers and mobile devices has become more crucial than ever in the digital world.

Both individuals and organizations greatly rely on technology as a means of communication, business operations, and storing sensitive data.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has today, October 22 issued a strong advisory to all Kenyans.

“Protect your smartphones, laptops, and personal data from cyber threats.”

With the rise of online fraud, phishing scams, and ransomware attacks, Kenyans are being urged to adopt safe digital practices.

This message comes as part of Cyber Security Awareness Month, celebrated globally under the theme “Secure Our World.”

DCI emphasizes that cybersecurity isn’t just a concern for the people on tech, but it’s a shared responsibility that begins with each user.

“Whether you are accessing the internet from home, the office, or anywhere, securing your device is key to preventing identity theft, financial loss, or data breaches.”

Strengthening the Computer Device Security

System Hardening

Hardening of a system makes a computer more resilient by reducing vulnerability. This can be achieved through:

1. Installing regular Software and OS updates

2 . Enabling full-disk encryption such as BitLocker.

3. Disabling unnecessary ports and services

4. Using Standard user accounts instead of administrator accounts.

5. Activating Secure Boot, TPM (Trusted Platform Module), and BIOS/UEFI passwords

Network and Access Controls

It is necessary to have strong network protection measures.

1. Use firewalls and intrusion prevention systems like Windows Defender firewalls.

2 . Require VPN (Virtual Private Network) for remote access

3. Segment critical systems from ordinary workstations

4. Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA) for sensitive logins

Endpoint Protection

Every device that connects to your network is a potential entry point for attackers

1. Deploy EDR/XDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) tools.

2 . Centralize log collection for SIEM (Security Information and Event Management).

3 .Install trusted anti-malware software with real-time protection.

Data Protection

Keep your data safe by:

1. Encrypting sensitive files and documents.

2. Performing and verifying regular backups.

3. Implementing data classification and access control policies

Protecting Mobile Devices

Smartphones and tablets have become important gadgets for both work and daily life as they store large amounts of data.

DCI warns that unsecured devices are a target to cyber criminals.

Device Hardening

1. Keep apps and operating systems updated through trusted sources (Google Play)

2. Enable device encryption and strong screen lock-ups.

3 . Disable developer options

4 . Avoid rooting or jailbreaking devices

Mobile Device Management

In the case of organizations, MDM solutions assist in imposing security by:

1. Require encryption, passwords, and password locks.

2  . Allow remote lock, locate or wipe functions in the event of loss via Find My Phone or similar applications.

App Security

Applications may be a significant source of a security threat. To minimize threats:

1.Install apps only from trusted stores

2. Use the application allow listing for corporate devices.

3. Turn off unnecessary permissions that compromise privacy

Network Security

Data breaches are prevented by safe connectivity practices:

1. Avoid public Wi-Fi; use a VPN for secure browsing

2. Enable secure DNS protocols such as DNS over TLS (DoT).

3. Turn off auto-connect to open networks.

Data and Backup

Lastly, guarantee the resilience of data by:

1. Use encrypted cloud backups.

2. Enable remote wipe features like Android to Find My Device or Apple’s Find My iPhone.
