Anger Mounts as Questions Grow Over Man’s Death After Alleged Madrassa Assault by 5 Men

Police in Makindu are investigating the death of Ahmed Amir Rosa, who reportedly died after an alleged assault inside the Naqshbandi Zawiyah Madrassa.

Four days after Rosa’s death, no arrests had been reported, as questions continued to surround what happened during his final hours, who was involved in the alleged assault and why he was reportedly not taken to hospital.

A man who says he was inside the madrassa at the time has said that Rosa was assaulted by five young men, including a teacher.

According to the witness, Rosa was beaten on Sunday but was not taken to hospital despite sustaining injuries. He alleged that people at the madrassa were prevented from taking him for medical attention.

“We were stopped from taking him to hospital, yet he had been beaten by five young men. He was removed from the bed, thrown down, and they started beating him,” the witness said.

The witness further claimed that one person initially beat Rosa before five young men were allegedly instructed to continue with the assault.

Rosa died several days later, with the witness saying he believed the death occurred on Thursday night or Friday morning.

A post-mortem examination reportedly found injuries consistent with blunt force trauma, adding to questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Residents raise concerns over previous incidents

Rosa’s death has also triggered wider concerns among some residents, with allegations that previous incidents involving children at the institution were not adequately addressed.

Tabu Ibrahim, a Makindu resident, claimed Rosa was not the first child to suffer serious harm at the institution.

She alleged that another child had previously been burned with hot water, but claimed no meaningful action was taken afterwards.

Ibrahim also accused both religious and government officials of failing to act on earlier complaints.

She said residents had raised concerns with the area Deputy County Commissioner but had yet to receive satisfactory answers.

“We cried out to the Madam DC, and she knows about the issue involving the sheikh, but up to now we have not received any answers,” Ibrahim said.

She added that Muslims in Makindu had considered demonstrations over the matter, saying residents were increasingly concerned about their safety and the lack of answers surrounding allegations linked to the institution.

Jamia Mosque distances itself from madrassa

As anger grows in Makindu, Jamia Mosque leaders have moved to clarify that the Naqshbandi Zawiyah Madrassa is not part of the mosque.

Juma Tuga, the imam of Jamia Mosque Makindu, said the institution at the centre of the investigation should not be identified as Jamia Mosque.

“It is known that this is not Jamia Mosque. The place is called Zawiya Naqshbandi in Makindu,” Tuga said, adding that the mosque has its own sheikh, identified as Fairozi Ali.

Meanwhile, Rosa’s family has also raised questions about his belongings following his death.

Leila Muhamed Amir, Rosa’s mother, said police who visited the scene indicated that the injuries appeared to have been sustained inside the institution.

She questioned what happened to her son’s clothes and phone, saying the family was told his clothes could not be found.

“They said this was a police case, and one police officer said it appeared that he had been beaten inside this place. We asked about his clothes, but they said they did not have them. The mattress he was sleeping on was also burned,” Amir said.

According to Amir, the mattress Rosa had been sleeping on was also burned. She questioned why the mattress was destroyed while his clothes and phone were reportedly missing.

Police have continued with investigations into the circumstances surrounding Rosa’s death.

However, several questions remain unanswered, including who assaulted him, why he was allegedly denied medical attention, what happened inside the madrassa before his death and what became of his personal belongings.
