Tragedy as 17-Year-Old School Prefect Dies Five Months After Alleged Stabbing

Alex  Ariango, a 17-Year-Old  student who was allegedly stabbed while trying to break up a fight at Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School in Dagoretti South, has died after spending five months undergoing treatment.

The Form Three student and class prefect reportedly intervened in April when two students got into a fight at the school.

According to reports, one of the students allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Ariango twice in the stomach as he attempted to separate the two.

He was then rushed to hospital following the incident, where he reportedly underwent several surgeries as his family hoped he would recover from the injuries.

Alex Ariango Dies Months After Alleged Attack

Reports circulating online indicate that Ariango died on September 1 after battling the injuries sustained in the alleged stabbing.

In addition, claims state that a pathologist determined that his death was linked to the wounds he suffered during the incident.

However, the information provided does not include an official post-mortem report or statement confirming the cause of death.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the student accused of stabbing Alex Ariango was reportedly arrested following the incident but was later released and is said to be out of custody.

The circumstances surrounding the reported release, including whether the suspect was charged or whether investigations are ongoing, have not been provided.

Ariango’s family is reportedly seeking answers following his death.

Kenyans Raises Questions Over School Security

The death has also renewed concerns over safety and security in schools and how weapons can be brought onto school premises.

Questions have been raised over how students are searched before entering school and the measures in place to prevent dangerous items from being brought into classrooms.

Some argued that prefects should receive training on situational awareness and be discouraged from physically intervening in dangerous situations.

One social media user suggested that prefects and teachers should be trained to assess risks before intervening, particularly where weapons may be involved.

“In this error, prefects should be told and trained on situational awareness, also teachers, some students are goons and phone snatchers outside school compound, if you are not police or trained security guard, avoid them for your safety”

Additionally, others raised broader concerns about student discipline and security in schools, with a social media user , Walter claiming that Ruthimitu Mixed Secondary School has previously faced challenges involving student behaviour.

“Ruthimitu is known to have very rogue students since kitambo ,Sorry to Alex’s family may he rest in peace, “ Walter wrote on X.
