Drama as Women Rep Aspirant Dives Into River to Help Retrieve Body

Kericho Women Representative aspirant Shaz Cheptoo  Langat attracted attention after diving into the Cheptinding River to help retrieve the body of an unidentified person.

Shaz joined residents and other people at the scene as they worked to recover the body from the water. The incident occurred in the Cheptinding/Cheptingting area of Kericho, with reports placing the recovery exercise in Kapsoit Ward.

The body had been discovered in the water, although its identity and the circumstances surrounding the death remained unclear at the time of reporting.

Shaz Cheptoo Joins Body Recovery Exercise

Rather than remain on the riverbank, Shaz entered the water and took part in the recovery operation.

In a statement shared after the incident, Shaz said she had volunteered to descend into the Cheptingting Quarry and participate in retrieving the unidentified body.

“Today, with the help of Laban, I volunteered to bravely descend into the Cheptingting Quarry and successfully participated in the retrieval of an unidentified body discovered at the site,” she said.

Reports identified Laban Kiplangat as one of the people who assisted in the recovery. The operation eventually succeeded in retrieving the body.

The circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately established, and authorities are expected to handle the identification and investigation.

Residents Cheer as Shaz Enters Water

As Shaz Cheptoo participated in the operation, people at the scene could be heard cheering and calling out her name.

Some members of the public praised her for joining the difficult recovery exercise, with one person telling her, “Good work.”

Her actions also generated a wider conversation online, with some people focusing on her bravery while others questioned whether her participation was connected to her political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kenyans Question Political Motives

The reactions to Shaz’s actions were sharply divided.

Tacoma added,“Sharp girl! Kenyans are emotional and it’s strategy politicians of the last few decades are ruthlessly taking advantage of”

Others focused on Shaz’s ability to swim.

Njerie wrote, “For that body build, I didn’t expect her to be that fluent at swimming,,she can take my vote😸”

Edwin asked, “Was the body recovered?”

Ambroche questioned whether she would take the same action if she were already in office

“Big quiz is , could she had done this when she’s already elected? Otherwise act of empathy before sympathy…”

Others Praise Her Bravery

Some commenters defended Shaz Cheptoo and praised her willingness to take part in the recovery.

Chepkindet wrote, “I like her swimming skills and bravery; it’s commendable. She only needs to do more cardio”

John, however, remained sceptical about the political timing,

“All these are PR. It’s a Campaign period and they can do anything possible to please anyone. After election try and reach her,she will be unreachable”
