REVEALED: Party Edwin Sifuna Plans to Use in His 2027 Presidential Bid

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna will use the United Democratic Party (UDP) as his political vehicle to contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on Sulwe FM on Thursday, September 24, 2026, Natembeya said Sifuna will seek the presidency through UDP as leaders within the movement pursue what he described as democratic and liberal unity.

“I am going to talk to you about democratic unity and liberal unity. Democratic unity, that is to say, Liberal Unity, that is to say, Liberal Unity,” Natembeya said.

Natembeya Names UDP as Sifuna’s Political Vehicle

The governor said voters would have the option of supporting candidates from different political parties while discussing the wider political realignment ahead of the elections.

He also described Sifuna as a significant political figure among Luhya voters.

“Sifuna is the spokesperson for the Luhyas. He is like Ruto to the Kalenjins; even if he says ‘vote for a donkey,’ they will all vote for it,” Natembeya said.

Natembeya’s remarks come amid developments surrounding UDP after the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) rejected an attempt to change the party’s name to Ukombozi People’s Party (UPP).

In a letter dated September 8, 2026, the Registrar said it had not approved or authorised UDP to use the proposed Ukombozi People’s Party name.

The ORPP said the proposed name resembled The Ukombozi Alliance, which had been reserved by another applicant.

ORPP Rejects UDP’s Proposed Ukombozi Name

The development comes amid uncertainty over the political party Sifuna and his allies will ultimately use in the 2027 presidential contest.

Sifuna had previously indicated that the movement was looking for a political brand rather than necessarily creating a new party, saying that it had several parties it could use.

Meanwhile, the dispute over the Ukombozi name has coincided with the rebranding of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition as The Ukombozi Alliance.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka announced on September 21 that the coalition had unanimously agreed to adopt the Ukombozi Alliance name ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The question of Sifuna’s political vehicle comes as parties prepare to meet statutory requirements ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The gazetted election timetable requires political parties intending to participate in the presidential election to submit the names and specimen signatures of their authorised officials by October 15, 2026.

Parties are also required to submit nomination rules certified by the Registrar by October 30.
