13 Kenyan Hospitals Set for 300-Bed Expansion as Cabinet Approves Ksh 8 Billion France Deal

Kenya is set to add thousands of hospital beds to its public healthcare system, with 13 Level Five hospitals earmarked for 300 additional beds each under a major expansion plan approved during a Cabinet meeting on Friday, October 9, 2026.

Expansion will run alongside construction of a new 2,000-bed Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and a 1,000-bed Level Six hospital in Mombasa. Together, the projects are expected to increase capacity at facilities serving patients who need advanced medical care.

The 13 counties targeted for the upgrades are Mandera, Marsabit, Turkana, Kilifi, Embu, Nakuru, Laikipia, Migori, Nyamira, Baringo, Bomet, Narok and Kisii.

Government says the investment will ease congestion at referral facilities and bring specialised healthcare services closer to patients.

Cabinet also approved a KSh8 billion healthcare programme in partnership with France to establish and equip specialised head and neck surgical units at Kenyatta National Hospital, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and the University of Nairobi Dental Hospital.

The partnership will strengthen specialised cancer treatment and support training for 5,000 community health workers as Kenya advances its Universal Health Coverage programme.
