Tanzania inaugurated President Samia Suluhu Hassan on November 3, 2025, at the Tanzania People’s Defense Force parade grounds in Dodoma, an unprecedented venue for a presidential swearing-in.
Normally, Tanzanian presidential inaugurations are open to the public, but this year’s ceremony was tightly controlled and closed to the public.
The event came in the wake of a tense general election held on October 30, 2025, where the Independent Electoral Commission announced that President Suluhu won the election with 97.66% of the votes cast, securing over 31.9 million of the 32.7 million votes cast.
The result extends her presidency for a second term.
The election excluded several key opposition figures, including Tundu Lissu of CHADEMA and Luhaga Mpina, both of whom were barred from running.
Several regional Heads of State, Deputy Presidents, and Dignitaries attended the swearing-in ceremony to witness the official start of President Suluhu’s new term.

The election has been marred by reports of violence, opposition boycotts, and internet restrictions that began days before voting.
After taking the oath, the Tanzanian People’s Defense Force gave President Suluhu a ceremonial military gun salute.
President Suluhu urged the Tanzanian security Agencies to restore normalcy in the country.
“As the presidents of Burundi and Zambia said, unrest in the country brings no benefit. I am calling for peace, unity, and calm in our nation of Tanzania,” she said.
