The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) will reconvene its top leadership to review the government’s two-phase payment plan for the Ksh7.9 billion debt.

The move signals a possible end to the 48-day university staff strike.

What UASU Said About the Strike

University Academic Staff Union (UASU) National Secretary-General Constantine Wasonga told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday, November 4, that the union would soon convene its leadership organs to reassess its stance in the ongoing dispute, citing the interests of students and the nation.

Wasonga said university lecturers were increasingly frustrated, noting that their readiness to go on strike reflected the level of demoralisation within the teaching fraternity

“For the sake of the children and students of this country, we are going to convene the organs of the union so that we can reconsider,” said Wasonga.

“You could tell from the way lecturers came out to strike — these are people who could have stayed out until January. But because of your chairmanship and the honourable members who have engaged with us, I am going to plead with our members to reconsider. You do not push us or call us names.”

National Treasury CS Message to Lecturers

However, National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has said that as far as the government should care for university lecturers but they have to look for formula that does not strain the pass of government.

Speaking before the National Assembly on November 4, 2025 Mbadi said the economy may be in crisis if the matter of crowding funds out to lecturer is not looked in properly.

“If you crowd out funding of our development budget, we will not have economic growth at all, therefore we may not even in future to pay salaries and meet other recurrent costs,” said Mbadi.

He added, “We must care about public university staff, but we also plead that we agree on a formula that will not put excessive strain on our pass.”
