Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo Impeached

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo has been impeached following a dramatic and highly charged session at the County Assembly on Tuesday.

The move came after Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted overwhelmingly to support an impeachment motion tabled by Majority Leader Julious Matwere.

According to Assembly records, 23 out of the 31 MCAs present cast their votes in favour of removing the governor, far surpassing the constitutional requirement of a two-thirds majority.

The decision capped what can be best described as an emotionally tense and politically divisive day in the assembly.

The impeachment motion,  accused Governor Nyaribo of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and alleged mismanagement of county resources.

Accusations of Misconduct and Deepening Political Rifts

The motion stems from months of escalating tension between the governor and a faction of MCAs who have accused him of overseeing poor service delivery and enabling questionable financial decisions.

During the debate, several MCAs alleged that county projects had stalled under Nyaribo’s watch, alleging irregular procurement processes and misuse of funds.

The impeachment marks the third attempt by the Assembly to remove Nyaribo from power, an indication of the longstanding rifts and power struggles within Nyamira’s political landscape.

Previous attempts failed to garner enough support, but shifting alliances and growing frustrations appeared to tilt the balance this time.

Next Step: Senate to Determine Nyaribo’s Fate

With the vote concluded, Governor Nyaribo will now face a Senate trial where a special committee or the plenary will evaluate the charges brought against him.

The Senate will decide whether to uphold the impeachment or reinstate him to office.

If the Senate affirms the Assembly’s decision, Nyaribo will become one of the few county governors to be formally removed from office under Kenya’s devolved governance system.

Governor Nyaribo, expected to defend himself before the Senate, now faces a critical battle that will determine the future of his tenure and legacy in Nyamira County.
