Kenya has once again reaffirmed its influence on the global ICT platform after being elected the Vice Chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).
The election was held in the recently completed World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Fred Ong’aro, who is the Deputy Director of Fund Strategy Coordination at the Communications Authority of Kenya, was elected to represent the African region in TDAG, which is one of the most critical advisory bodies of the ITU under the ITU-D sector.
Following the election, Mr. Ong’aro stated that Kenya’s new role,” places the country at the center of global digital policy development and strengthens our ability to champion Africa’s priorities on the global stage.”
This is the second occasion Kenya is taking up the role of Vice Chair of TDAG, and this indicates that Kenya is consistent and credible in its ICT leadership.
According to the Communications Authority, this election boosts Kenya’s influence in the global ICT strategies, increases its presence in the global forums, and increases its resource mobilization and sharing of knowledge.
As observed by CA, the confidence that the member states exhibit “reflects Kenya’s expertise, commitment and longstanding contribution to advancing telecommunications development globally.”

One of the key ITU forums, the WTDC, is a forum that convenes governments, regulators, industry leaders, and development partners to establish priorities in the global ICT development.
Held every four years, the conference focuses on strategies that lead to the digital transformation, improve connectivity, capacity building, and bridge the digital divide, particularly in developing countries.
Kenya representatives to WTDC were the Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, Hon. William Kabogo, and the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary, Stephen Isaboke.
CS Kabogo said the election” demonstrates Kenya’s unwavering commitment to shaping global ICT policies and ensuring that Africa’s voice is strong.”
PS Isaboke further said that Kenya is eager to intensify partnerships, noting,”We are committed to working with ITU member states to speed up digital inclusion, increase connectivity, and drive innovation across the region.”

Throughout the conference, the Kenyan delegation engaged in bilateral meetings, high-level discussions to support partnerships and mobilize support to programmes that boost the growth of ICT.
According to CA, the increased participation of Kenya in TDAG will assist the nation “advance inclusive digital transformation, and advocate for the interests of developing countries.”
By contributing to WTDC and assuming this leadership role, Kenya continues to shape global programmes that promote connectivity, capacity development, and ICT innovation for emerging economies.
