Elgeyo Marakwet Residents Plan Parallel Mashujaa Day Celebration, Seek Gachagua as Chief Guest

Residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County have announced plans to hold a parallel Mashujaa Day celebration after the national event was shifted from Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet County to Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

In a letter issued on July 20, 2026, the residents expressed their disappointment saying they had eagerly prepared to host the national celebrations and honour Kenya’s heroes within their county.

However, they raised concerns over the change of venue, arguing that the decision disappointed a community that had looked forward to welcoming the country during the annual event.

“We, the residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County, write to you with respect and sincere regards. It is with deep disappointment and concern that we received the news that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, which was to be proudly hosted at Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet County, has been moved to Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County,” the residents stated.

The residents explained that they expected Kamariny Stadium to provide a platform where they could celebrate Kenya’s heroes while showcasing the county’s contribution to the nation.

Residents Turn to Gachagua for Parallel Mashujaa Day Celebration

Following the venue change, the residents invited former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to attend their planned event and serve as the chief guest.

They said Gachagua’s participation would help them celebrate the occasion while addressing their concerns about fairness and inclusion.

“In light of this, we humbly and wholeheartedly invite you, His Excellency Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH, to be our chief guest and lead us in this important day as we celebrate the heroes of our nation and stand for fairness, equity, and respect for all communities,” the letter stated.

“Your presence will mean a lot to us and will give hope and encouragement to the people of Elgeyo Marakwet,” the residents added.

Meanwhile, the residents have continued to rally behind the planned parallel celebration as they seek to honour national heroes within their county.

The move comes after the relocation of the Mashujaa Day celebrations from Kamariny Stadium to Eldoret sparked reactions among some residents of Elgeyo Marakwet, who believe the county deserved an opportunity to host the national event.
