FKF Postpones Urgent KPL Meeting as League Standoff Deepens

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has postponed its planned urgent meeting with Kenyan Premier League clubs from Monday, August 31 to Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The meeting will still start at 9am and is expected to bring together FKF officials and club representatives to discuss the way forward for the 2026/27 season.

FKF had called the meeting after postponing the opening round of the league amid an ongoing standoff over the regulations that should govern the new campaign.

In a communication to clubs on Sunday evening August 30, FKF said it moved the meeting after receiving a request from the clubs and holding internal consultations.

“Following request from the clubs, and after internal consultations, kindly note that the meeting scheduled for Monday, 31st August 2026 has been rescheduled to Wednesday, 2nd September 2026,” FKF said.

The federation did not give further details on the reasons behind the clubs’ request.

FKF Meeting to Address League Standoff

The Wednesday meeting is expected to provide a platform for FKF and the clubs to discuss the issues surrounding the start of the new season.

Among the matters expected to come under discussion is the application of the 2019 FKF Rules and Regulations, which the High Court in Murang’a directed FKF to use for the 2026/27 campaign pending the determination of the case before it.

The directive has caused concern among clubs that prepared their squads under the 2025 regulations.

One of the main issues is the foreign-player quota, with the 2019 regulations allowing clubs to register a maximum of five foreign players compared to seven under the 2025 rules.

Several clubs have already signed more than five foreign players, leaving them facing difficult squad decisions if the 2019 regulations remain in force.

Federation Postpones Round One Fixtures

The ongoing dispute has already forced FKF to postpone the opening round of the 2026/27 Kenyan Premier League season.

All Round One matches that were scheduled between Monday, August 31 and Wednesday, September 2 have been postponed as the federation seeks more time to engage clubs, the league, and sponsors.

In a communication to clubs, FKF’s Leagues and Competitions Department said the delay would allow further discussions on managing the new season.

“This is so as to allow for deliberations between the Federation, participating Clubs and the League sponsors that will provide direction and guidance on the management of the League for the upcoming Season,” the communication read in part.

The federation said the Round One fixtures, together with the full-season schedule, will be communicated to clubs and other stakeholders “within the shortest time possible.”
