Gachagua Announces Plan to Form “Hyena Coalition” Ahead of the 2027 Election

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has announced that he, together with his co-principals from the Mount Kenya region, will form a coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking to several aspirants from Nakuru at his Wamunyoro home on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader said he would hold talks with Democratic Party (DP) leader Justin Muturi to form the Hyena Coalition, following remarks by Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who likened Kikuyus to hyenas.

“My brother JB, please bring together all our leaders from the Mount Kenya region so that we can form the Hyena Coalition—all the hyenas—to defeat Kasongo (Ruto),” Gachagua said.

Gachagua Calls for Opposition Unity

Gachagua further stated that he has no problem with his fellow co-principals and members of the United Opposition, saying they should unite to defeat what he described as their common political opponent, President William Ruto.

The DCP party leader urged politicians within the United Opposition to refrain from criticising one another, citing the events of Wednesday, August 5, when a group of leaders allied to Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i accused him of belittling small parties within the opposition.

Gachagua argued that infighting within the opposition would give President William Ruto an easy path to re-election in the 2027 General Election.

“Let’s not fight among ourselves. Can’t you see how much the government is enjoying it?” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President added that he would ask members of his party to tone down their criticism of leaders from other parties within the opposition, saying their energy should instead be focused on ensuring that President William Ruto is not re-elected.

Munya Accuses DCP Leader of Bullying

Gachagua’s remarks come at a time when divisions are growing within the opposition. The tensions began after PNU leader Peter Munya accused the former Deputy President of being a bully and displaying dictatorial leadership.

Speaking during a Citizen TV interview, Munya said Gachagua’s confrontational style, disrespectful remarks toward fellow leaders, and attempts to influence other political parties were hurting efforts to unite the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Munya was joined by Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi and former Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti, who rejected what they described as attempts by Gachagua and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) to dictate how other parties should operate or to position himself as the sole political spokesman for the Mount Kenya region.

The disagreement escalated after Gachagua criticised PNU’s poor performance in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election and called on smaller parties to strengthen their grassroots support or align with DCP.

However, Gachagua has dismissed the accusations, saying his actions are meant to strengthen and unite the opposition, not intimidate or control its leaders.
