‘Ile Nyumba Inafaa Kwa Salasya’ – Jalang’o Weighs in on Salasya and Sifuna’s House Debate

Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, has joined the ongoing public debate about the official residences of Mumias East MP Peter Salasya and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

Speaking on Radio Presenter Alex Mwakideu’s podcast, Jalang’o said each leader’s housing structure should reflect their responsibilities and jurisdiction.

Jalang’o Defends Sifuna’s Residence

Jalang’o defended Sifuna’s residence, arguing that, like him, the senator rarely spends time at his rural home because both primarily work from Nairobi due to their official duties.

“On the issue of the house, I agree with the senator. I built my house nearly ten years ago. It’s a modest house, and if you add up all the time I spend there in a year, I sleep there for only about one month. Yet I still pay for water, electricity and other bills, just like Sifuna does,” said Jalang’o.

Furthermore, Jalang’o suggested that leaders who spend most of their time in Nairobi do not require larger official residences elsewhere.

He said the same principle applies to leaders who mainly work within their constituencies.

Why Jalang’o Says Salasya’s House Is Enough

According to Jalang’o, Salasya’s current house suits his responsibilities as the MP for Mumias East because he rarely stays in Nairobi.

“Kwa Salasya ile nyumba inafaa, kwa sababu yeye ni kiongozi wa kule Mumias sababu haspend time sana Nairobi,” Jalang’o said. Loosely translated, “That kind of house suits Salasya because he is a leader in Mumias and doesn’t spend much of his time in Nairobi.”

In his own explanation, Salasya’s large house in Mumias can host all his political meetings and everything as he prepares himself for leadership. And that is enough and good for him as well as the counterpart, Sifuna.

He also questioned how much time Sifuna spends in his official residence because of his busy political schedule, thus supporting his small house in Bungoma.

In addition, Jalang’o said Sifuna should now build a bigger home to host meetings and accommodate more people since he wants to become president.

“Salasya wacha ajenge ile yake kubwa nyumbani lakini ile ya Sifuna sijui kama hata analala ndani kwa sababu ya shughuli hapa na pale., lakini kwa sababu anataka kua rais, ni yeye atafute acre kumi, aweke kasri, sehemu za mikutano na parking.”

Jalang’o’s remarks add a new perspective to the discussion over official residences for public leaders. Meanwhile, the debate continues to attract mixed reactions across social media platforms.
