KeNHA Announces 36-Day Mombasa Road Closure on JKIA Route

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a 36-day partial closure of Mombasa Road (A8) at Cabanas along the Eastern Bypass off-ramp on the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA)-bound side.

In a public notice issued on Thursday, September 10, 2026, KeNHA said the partial closure will take effect from Thursday, September 17, and remain in place until Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The authority explained that the closure will facilitate the construction of a box drain along the affected section of the road.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) notifies the public that a section of Mombasa Road (A8) at the Cabanas on the Eastern Bypass Off-Ramp on JKIA bound, will be temporarily closed partially from Thursday, September 17, 2026, to Thursday, October 22, 2026. This closure is to allow for construction of a box drain on this road section,” KeNHA stated.

Mombasa Road Closure Diversion Route

During the construction period, motorists travelling from the Eastern Bypass towards JKIA will use the diversion lane provided at the affected section.

According to the traffic management map issued alongside the notice, the marked diversion takes motorists around the section designated as “Road Closed” before directing them towards the Mombasa-bound carriageway. Traffic marshals will guide motorists through the temporary arrangement.

To minimize traffic disruption, KeNHA has directed motorists approaching Mombasa Road from the Eastern Bypass to use the designated diversion lane and follow instructions issued by traffic marshals at the site.

“All Motorists intending to use Mombasa Road (JKIA bound) from Eastern Bypass will use provided diversion lane and follow the proposed directions by traffic marshals to ensure minimal traffic disruption in compliance with road safety measures,” the authority stated.

KeNHA Issues Traffic Advisory

Meanwhile, the authority has urged motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan throughout the construction period.

In addition, drivers will need to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals deployed to manage traffic around the affected section.

KeNHA said the measures will help minimize disruption as construction teams undertake the drainage works.

“Motorists are further advised to follow the proposed traffic management plan as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site. Normal traffic operations on the road will be restored upon completion of the works,” it added.

KeNHA Steps Up Traffic Management

The Cabanas works come as KeNHA continues to monitor road conditions and manage traffic disruptions on major highways.

On September 9, the authority joined traffic-management efforts along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway after heavy congestion affected motorists around Rironi.

Meanwhile, KeNHA has inspected several road sections in Kiambu County ahead of anticipated El Niño rains.

The inspections covered Muthaiga–Kiambu, Kiambu–Limuru, Ndenderu–Kamandura and Ruaka–Ndenderu–Gitaru, with the authority assessing road conditions and drainage systems.

Against this backdrop, motorists using the Eastern Bypass should plan for the traffic changes around Cabanas from September 17.
