KNEC Announces New Online Training for Select Teachers – How to Apply

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has invited qualified teachers to apply for an online training programme aimed at strengthening skills in developing assessment items for the Competency-Based Assessment.

In a notice dated September 15, KNEC said the training will target teachers currently teaching at Senior School and Vocational Level and will run from October 12 to October 30, 2026.

The programme is intended to strengthen the capacity of teachers and teacher educators in classroom and national assessment while supporting the development of quality test items.

“To uphold these standards and support effective evaluation of learner competencies, KNEC invites qualified teachers teaching at Senior School and Vocational Level to apply for an online Training in Item Writing. This training is scheduled to take place from 12th to 30th October 2026 and will focus on the development of quality test items for Competency-Based Assessment,” read part of the notice.

KNEC Sets Requirements for Training

KNEC said applicants must have an unquestionable level of integrity and an irreproachable professional record.

They must also be qualified professionals, experts or subject specialists in the subjects for which they are seeking training.

Applicants should currently be teaching the subject they apply for at either Senior School or Vocational Level under the Stage-Based Curriculum, as well as possess relevant academic and professional qualifications in their subject or learning area and demonstrate familiarity with the applicable curriculum designs.

Additionally, the Council said applicants must have at least one year of teaching experience to qualify for consideration.

They must also be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and receive a formal recommendation from the head of their institution.

KNEC said the requirements will help ensure that the training is undertaken by teachers with the necessary professional and subject knowledge.

Furthermore, KNEC said that teachers who complete the online programme will be certified by KNEC.

The council said certified participants may subsequently be engaged in assessment-related activities from time to time, depending on its needs.

How to Apply

Interested and qualified teachers are required to submit their applications online through the KNEC examiners application portal KNEC Examiners Application Portal on or before September 30, 2026.

Teachers seeking further information about the application process can visit the KNEC official website.

Meanwhile, KNEC advised teachers who have previously undergone its item-writing training not to apply.

The council also noted that only shortlisted applicants will be notified.

The programme is part of KNEC’s wider mandate to set and maintain national examination and assessment standards while supporting effective evaluation of learner competencies across Kenya’s education system.
