National Treasury CS John Mbadi has addressed whether the ODM party will field a candidate for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

While addressing Nairobi members of the press, Mbadi said that a committee of members had been selected by President William Ruto and ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga to determine how the two sides will distribute seats in the 2027 General Election.

Mbadi said the two sides had agreed to form a 10-member team that will discuss the structure and arrangements of the coalition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He explained that President William Ruto, who leads the Kenya Kwanza coalition, and ODM leader Oburu Oginga would each appoint five members to the team.

“First of all, we agreed in Naivasha yesterday, if you read the speech that was read by the President yesterday, that we are putting together a team of ten individuals,” Mbadi said.

Additionally, the CS noted that the team had not yet been constituted, but the two party leaders had been tasked with selecting their representatives, adding that the question of who will contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat would be handled by the team once it is constituted.

“The team has not been put up, but we gave the two party leaders, the party leader of Kenya Kwanza and that of ODM, to bring five, five members to the table to discuss the coalition structure, coalition arrangement and how we are moving forward,” he added.

ODM Leaders Back Coalition Deal

Mbadi also dismissed claims of a splinter group within ODM’s Nairobi branch, saying the party’s constituency leadership in the region remained united behind the ODM-UDA arrangement.

According to Mbadi, all 17 ODM constituency chairpersons in Nairobi support the political agreement between the two parties.

These remarks come a week after the CS said he would play an active role in strengthening ODM ahead of the 2027 General Election, expressing confidence that the party could secure a significant number of seats across the country.

Mbadi stated that he would dedicate his free time to political activities aimed at strengthening the party while assuring ODM supporters that he would continue working to expand the party’s political influence across the country.

“I assure the ODM fraternity that I will do everything in my power to strengthen this party, which I served as chairman for 10 years,” he said.
