“Professor” Abraham Kemboi: Meet the Police Drill Master Behind Kenya’s Parades

Abraham Kemboi has built a distinguished career in the Administration Police Service through discipline, precision, and leadership.

He is frequently referred to as a “professor” or “drill master” by peers, recruits, and the public due to his unmatched mastery, precision, and expertise in coordinating complex foot drills and parade slow marches

He joined the service as a junior officer in the early 1990s and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually taking on senior responsibilities in training, mentorship, and officer development.

Today, Kemboi serves as a Superintendent of Police (SP) and the Director of the School of Basic and Supervisory Training at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus.

By May 2025, he had already held the position of Director of Basic and Supervisory Training, and later Administration Police Service records identified him as an SP in the same role.

However, Kemboi’s influence reaches beyond his official responsibilities. Over the years, he has developed a strong reputation for police drill and parade command, where he guides officers through precise formations, coordinated movements, and disciplined routines.

At the same time, he has combined his parade expertise with training and mentorship. Through these responsibilities, Kemboi helps prepare recruits for the demands of police service while passing on the discipline and professionalism that have shaped his own career.

How Kemboi Rose From Kapkoros To The Police Service

Kemboi’s journey began in Kapkoros Village, Katanin, Kilibwoni Location, where publicly circulated biographical information says he was born and raised.

He grew up in a humble family led by a retired teacher, who instilled discipline and hard work in him from an early age.

In the early 1990s, Kemboi joined the Administration Police Service as a junior officer and began building a career that would span decades.

From that starting point, he worked his way through the ranks. As he took on new responsibilities, he gained experience in security management, leadership, mentorship and officer development.

His rise from constable to senior officer reflects a career shaped by commitment and professionalism. More importantly, the experience he gained along the way eventually enabled him to help develop other officers.

From Officer To Trainer

As his career progressed, Kemboi moved beyond his own operational responsibilities and began playing a larger role in preparing other officers for service.

That progression eventually led him to the School of Basic and Supervisory Training.

By May 2025, he was serving as the Director of Basic and Supervisory Training. From that position, he helps oversee training and professional development at the National Police College Embakasi ‘A’ Campus.

His responsibilities begin at one of the most important stages of an officer’s career. During training, recruits must develop discipline, teamwork, confidence and professional conduct before they enter wider police duties.

As a result, Kemboi does more than manage training programmes. He helps set the standards recruits must meet before taking their skills into the field.

The Drill Master Behind The Formations

Drill has become a defining part of Kemboi’s professional identity. On the parade ground, he works with officers who must respond to commands simultaneously, maintain formation and execute movements with precision.

That process demands concentration as much as physical coordination. Every command requires officers to listen carefully, respond together and maintain discipline throughout the formation.

For years, Kemboi has helped recruits develop those qualities. Public profiles have described him as a drill master, while Administration Police Service material has highlighted his involvement in recruit precision and parade-pattern training.

His expertise has also taken him into major police ceremonies. In December 2025, Kemboi served as parade commander during a graduation ceremony at the National Police College Embakasi, where he led the slow march as recruits completed their training.

When Kemboi Took Command

That reputation was on display on September 4, 2026, when Kemboi served as the parade commander during the passing-out parade for Administration Police recruits.

As the ceremony prepared to receive President William Ruto, the announcer introduced him as Afande Abu, highlighting his experience in police parade command and his standing across the region.

“This is leadership that is recognised and respected across the African region for his unique expertise in various parade formations, which can be found nowhere else but in this unit,” she said.

She also highlighted his role in national ceremonies and police training, noting his contribution to parade preparations and his work at the college.

“He has been one of the key advisers on parade matters, especially the national-day parades in our country, Kenya. He is also the Director of the School of Basic and Supervisory Training at this college. You are a blessing and a treasure to the unit. May God continue to protect you, Afande Abu,” she added.

The September 4 ceremony offered a glimpse into the career Kemboi has built around parade command, training, leadership and mentorship.
