SHA Suspends M.P. Shah Hospital from Contracted Services with Immediate Effect

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has temporarily suspended M.P. Shah Hospital from its panel of contracted healthcare providers with immediate effect.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, June 24, SHA CEO Dr Mercy Mwangangi said the suspension took effect on June 23, 2026, and will remain in place until ongoing investigations are concluded.

“The Social Health Authority informs beneficiaries and the public that M.P. Shah Hospital has been temporarily suspended from the SHA panel of contracted healthcare providers, with effect from 23 June 2026, pending the conclusion of investigations,” the authority stated.

The suspension affects services offered under the Primary Healthcare Fund (PHCF), Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund (ECCIF), and the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund (POMSF).

SHA said patients who were admitted to M.P. Shah Hospital before the suspension took effect will continue receiving treatment until they are discharged.

The authority explained that the arrangement is meant to ensure patients already receiving care at the facility do not experience disruptions.

Meanwhile, patients seeking new admissions, follow-up treatment, or other medical services have been advised to visit other healthcare facilities contracted by SHA during the suspension period.

SHA said beneficiaries can find the list of contracted healthcare providers on its website (www.sha.go.ke) and through the Afya Yangu platform.

Beneficiaries requiring new admissions, follow-up treatment, or other services during the suspension period are advised to seek care from other SHA-contracted healthcare providers.

The authority also asked anyone requiring assistance with referrals or continuity of care to contact its toll-free number, 147.

SHA further stated that it appreciates the cooperation and understanding of beneficiaries and stakeholders and remains committed to safeguarding access to quality and accountable healthcare services.

The suspension comes months after SHA took similar action against Bungoma West Hospital over suspected fraudulent claims.

In April 2026, SHA suspended the hospital for 90 days after it was accused of submitting fake billing and other improper claims that allegedly breached its contract with the authority.

At the time, SHA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Mercy Mwangangi said the facility had been barred from providing healthcare services to SHA beneficiaries and conducting transactions with the authority pending investigations.

The hospital was also directed to transfer affected patients to nearby SHA-contracted facilities and cooperate with investigators.
