Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School Closed After Night of Chaos, Fire Razes Buildings

Students at Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School in Nakuru County have been sent home after protests at the institution led to the destruction of property and the burning of classrooms.

Police are investigating the incident and seeking to identify those involved. The protests mark the second time students at the school have staged unrest this year.

The protests at Jomo Kenyatta Boys High School turned chaotic on the night of September 2, 2026, as police fired gunshots and used tear gas after students allegedly charged at them.

Videos that have emerged online show students shouting at police officers and using abusive language during the protests.

Police Fired Gunshots

Police went there to manage the situation because the boys in the school were protesting and setting the school on fire amid student unrest.

Videos online showed fire burning in the school as the police fired gunshots and tear gas at the students trying to contain the situation.

Nearby residents raised the alarm through phone calls and text messages, seeking to know what was happening at the school after hearing noise and gunshots.

Residents expressed concern for the students, noting that this was the second strike at the school this year.

Classrooms Burn Down

The first strike in the school was in July after the students burned down the school because they were given soda instead of meat.

Further reports indicate police and school authorities suspect the blaze was deliberately started by students angered after being denied permission to attend a neighbouring school’s event.

School guards were seen in the video looking for water to put out the fire, which was spreading fast as the students continued protesting.

Their classrooms were burnt down completely, with only remains staying behind, leaving parents wondering why their children are protesting the second time this year.

After the first protests, the students were told to pay Ksh 4,400 each to cater for damages of the property that was destroyed in the strike.

As of now, the school has been closed indefinitely, with the students going home as police step in to investigate.
