Uhuru Resurfaces Days After Court Ruling on His Jubilee Seat

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has made a public appearance in Murang’a days after the High Court upheld a law restricting retired presidents from holding formal leadership positions in political parties.

Uhuru attended the funeral of Christine Waruguru Kariuki, the mother of former State House Comptroller George Kariuki, in Gikuu, Kiharu Constituency, Murang’a County.

His appearance came four days after Justice Lawrence Mugambi ruled that Section 6 of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act limits retired presidents from holding political party office beyond six months after leaving the presidency.

Uhuru Honours Mothers’ Role in Shaping Kenya

During the funeral, Uhuru delivered a condolence message in which he celebrated the life of Christine Kariuki and reflected on the contribution of mothers to Kenyan families and society.

He described the deceased’s life as an example of boldness, resilience and grace, while highlighting the challenges she faced and the legacy she built.

“Maito’s life, as we have all heard, has been a great example of boldness, resilience, and grace, from the challenges she faced in her youth to the triumph of building our businesses,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru also recognised the contribution of an older generation of women, saying their role in shaping families and the country is often overlooked.

“We celebrate these great and wonderful women of Kenya who made us, who made this country what it is today,” he said.

The former president said celebrations and recognition of family contributions should not focus only on fathers, noting the important role mothers have played in raising generations of Kenyans.

He added that the stories shared about mothers and grandmothers offered an opportunity to understand the difficulties and achievements of previous generations.

Former President Jokes About ‘Linda Sponsor’ Claims

The former president also made a light-hearted reference to the political attention surrounding claims that he is backing the Linda Mwananchi movement.

President William Ruto has previously linked Uhuru to the movement and accused him of funding Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the group, referring to the alleged backing using the phrase “Linda Sponsor.”

During his remarks, Uhuru briefly alluded to the political attention surrounding him, joking about the possibility of his words being interpreted politically.

“These days, life is getting quite dangerous for me. So, I decided before the media misinterpreted my words,” he said.
