Kenya Met Lists Counties to Receive Rainfall in Final Week of August

The Kenya Meteorological Service (KMS), has listed areas expected to receive rainfall between August 29 and September 2, 2026, as most parts of the country experience sunny intervals and partly cloudy conditions.

According to the five-day forecast issued on August 27 by Kenya Met, stated that only a few counties will receive rainfall during the forecast period, with most areas remaining generally dry.

The forecast shows that parts of the Coast, Central Highlands, Nairobi, and northern and north-eastern Kenya will receive light rains or showers at different times.

Meanwhile, temperatures will vary significantly, with some northern counties recording highs of up to 38°C while parts of Central Kenya experience chilly nights.

Kenya Met Predicts Light Rains in Nairobi and Central Kenya

In Nairobi, Kenya Met forecasts a brief wet spell, with light showers expected on Sunday night followed by light rains on Monday morning. The capital will record temperatures ranging from a minimum of 9°C to a daytime high of 28°C.

Elsewhere, several Central Highlands counties will also receive rainfall. Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Embu, Kitui and Machakos could experience light rains and showers from Sunday into Monday.

Similarly, Kirinyaga, Murang’a and Kiambu will receive light rains and showers, particularly on Sunday night and Monday.

However, temperatures will remain low in some highland areas as Nyandarua will record some of the coldest conditions in the country, with minimum temperatures falling to between 4°C and 6°C.

Nyeri, on the other hand, will record minimum temperatures of about 10°C to 13°C while also experiencing cold early mornings and nights.

Coastal Counties to Receive Light Showers

Meanwhile, coastal counties will experience a mixture of sunny intervals and light rainfall as Kenya Met predicts that Mombasa and Kwale will receive light showers mainly during the mornings, while Kilifi will experience showers at different times, including mornings and some nights.

In addition, Lamu will receive light showers on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, while Taita/Taveta could experience localized light showers on Sunday afternoon.

Tana River will remain mostly sunny throughout the forecast period. Nevertheless, KMS expects the county to receive light rain on Monday morning, with daytime temperatures reaching 32°C to 33°C.

Kenya Met Forecasts Hot Conditions in Northern Kenya

Further north, most counties will remain sunny, although a few areas could receive isolated rainfall.

Wajir will receive light rains on Sunday and Monday mornings, while Garissa could record light rain on Monday morning. Mandera will also receive light rain on Tuesday morning.

Despite the possibility of rainfall, temperatures will remain high across the region as Mandera will record the highest temperatures, with daytime highs reaching 37°C to 38°C according to Kenya Met.

Wajir will follow with highs of 35°C to 36°C, while Garissa will record temperatures of up to 34°C to 35°C.

In contrast, Marsabit will experience cooler conditions, with maximum temperatures ranging between 25°C and 27°C. The county could also receive light rain on Monday morning and light showers on Sunday and Monday nights.

Western Kenya to Experience Sunny Conditions

Across Western Kenya, most counties will remain dry. Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira will experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies at night.

Kisumu will record some of the highest temperatures in the region, with daytime highs reaching 32°C to 34°C.

Meanwhile, cooler highland counties such as Kisii and Nyamira will record maximum temperatures of about 28°C to 30°C.

Similarly, most parts of the Rift Valley will experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy nights. Turkana will remain particularly hot, with temperatures reaching 36°C to 37°C.

On the other hand, Samburu will experience some of the coldest nights in the region, with minimum temperatures falling to between 8°C and 9°C.
