A debate on social media has emerged over the growing trend of Nairobi clubs and entertainment spots adopting names linked to notorious crime figures and drug cartels, with critics warning that the branding normalizes illicit activity.

The conversation was sparked by Kenyan X user Fanta Bariidi, @MeranSays, who questioned the choice of names such as “Sinaloa”, “Al Capone” and “The Syndicate” for local clubs.

“Hizi club names sasa ziko too on the nose. Do we have to make it obvious we’re running a laundry? Sinaloa, Al Capone, The Syndicate…” she posted, in reference to a viral video of media personality Maina Kageni celebrating a Ksh 2.5 million win at Club Sinaloa.

Kenyans’ Humorous Reactions on Social Media to a Viral Video of Radio Personality Maina Kageni

The post was in response to a viral video of popular radio personality Maina Kageni celebrating at Club Sinaloa.

According to posts circulating online, Kageni walked away Ksh 2.5 million richer after betting against his friends at the club during the FIFA World Cup Final.

He had confidently staked on Spain to win, and after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0, he received a handsome payout.

Sinaloa refers to the Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations.

Al Capone was a notorious American gangster of the Prohibition era.

Bariidi’s post drew hundreds of reactions, with many Kenyans using humor and sarcasm to weigh in.

User Sajid Abu Sajid, @AlhajiKe, wrote: “Let them exhaust Mexican cartel names waingie Nicaragua sasa.”

Another user, @Gilbert950027, commented: “he, na bado kuna mingi – wacha tungoje club yakuza, na akina Guzman lounge.”

Public’s Mixed Reactions and Concerns Regarding Nairobi Clubs and Media Trend

Others were more direct.

@EduGWiz posted: “They don’t even hide it anymore” while @John_Njuguna_ wrote: “Sinaloa that does fine dining and nyama choma special…. has to be the biggest wash in the area.”

Many fans raised the question of how club owners and promoters have in recent years embraced “mafia” and “boss” themed branding, complete with cash-spraying videos, luxury cars, and VIP sections marketed as exclusive.

The style mirrors trends popularized in music videos and global streaming series.

A few Kenyans online seemed to believe that the names were innocent pop references with no real relation to crime.

Others felt it was bad optics considering the current scrutiny surrounding illicit cash in the media and in the construction industry.
