Kenya Met Reveals Regions Set to Receive Rainfall on Thursday and Friday

The Kenya Meteorological Department has forecast rainfall in several parts of the country from Wednesday night, September 16, to Thursday night, September 17, 2026.
The weather forecast, issued at 3pm on Wednesday, covers the period from 9pm on September 16 to 9pm on September 17.
According to the department, rainfall is expected in parts of Kericho, Kakamega, Nandi, Kisumu, Vihiga, Baringo, Bomet, Homa Bay, Nakuru, Bungoma, Busia, Siaya, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu and Kilifi counties.
Kenya Met Forecasts Strong Winds in Several Counties
The Kenya Meteorological Department also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds in parts of northern and coastal Kenya.
Winds of above 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) are expected in parts of Turkana, Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain alert, particularly in areas exposed to strong winds.
Rainfall Forecast for Nairobi
In Nairobi, the department forecast partly cloudy conditions on Wednesday September 16 night, with light showers likely in a few places.
The city could experience cloudy conditions in the morning, with a chance of light rain in a few areas. The afternoon is expected to bring sunny intervals, with a chance of light showers.
Nairobi is expected to record a maximum temperature of 23°C and a minimum of 14°C. Western Kenya to Experience Showers and Thunderstorms
Several counties in western Kenya are expected to experience showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon.
Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia and Kericho could record moderate showers and thunderstorms in some areas.
The forecast also places Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii and Nyamira among counties likely to receive light showers in a few places.
The department’s forecast indicates that rainfall will not cover entire counties. Its classification defines “few places” as affecting less than 33 per cent of an area.
Rainfall Expected in Central Kenya
Parts of Central Kenya will also receive light rain and showers. Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a and Kiambu are expected to experience showers at different times during the forecast period.
Nyandarua is expected to have a maximum temperature of 19°C and a minimum of 9°C, making it one of the cooler counties in the forecast.

Coastal Counties to Receive Light Showers
Along the Coast, Mombasa and Kwale are expected to experience partly cloudy conditions with light showers in a few places.
Kilifi could experience sunny intervals, with a chance of light showers in a few areas during the morning.
In Lamu, the department forecast light showers in a few places, while Taita Taveta could also receive light showers. Mombasa is expected to record a maximum temperature of 29°C and a minimum of 23°C.

Recent Heavy Rainfall Recorded in Kisii and Kericho
The latest rainfall data from the Kenya Meteorological Department showed significant rainfall in some parts of the country between 9am on September 15 and 9am on September 16.
Kisii recorded about 43mm of rainfall, while Kericho received about 22mm during the 24-hour period. According to the department’s classification, rainfall between 21mm and 50mm is considered heavy, while amounts above 50mm are classified as very heavy.
Other recorded rainfall included about 5mm in Kangema, 4.5mm in Mombasa, 3.5mm in Butere, 3mm in Dzitsoni Lii and Nanyuki, and 3mm at Eldoret Airport.
The Kenya Meteorological Department continues to advise the public to stay informed and prepare for changing weather conditions.
