RAIN ALERT: Kenya Met Warns of Rains and Thunderstorms in 44 Counties This Week

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has forecast rainfall in 44 counties between September 15 and 21, with several areas expected to experience afternoon showers, thunderstorms and occasional night rains.
In its weekly weather forecast dated September 14, Kenya Met said rainfall would affect parts of the Highlands, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Coast, North-eastern Kenya and parts of the eastern region during the seven days.
The Weatherman also forecast daytime temperatures of more than 30°C in several counties, including Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Turkana.
At night, minimum average temperatures are expected to fall below 10°C in parts of Meru, Tharaka-Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Narok, Taita Taveta and Kajiado.
Kenya Met Forecasts Morning, Afternoon and Night Rains
According to Kenya Met, morning showers are expected in several parts of Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu counties.
Morning rains may also occur in a few parts of Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Marsabit, Wajir and Mandera.
Several areas in Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin are expected to receive afternoon showers and thunderstorms. The forecast covers parts of Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo Marakwet, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kericho, Kisii, Kisumu, Migori, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Siaya, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu and Vihiga.

Afternoon showers are also likely in several parts of Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Kwale, Lamu, Kilifi, Meru, Mombasa, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri and Tharaka-Nithi.
A few parts of Garissa, Kajiado, Laikipia, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Taita Taveta and Tana River may also receive afternoon showers.
Night showers may occur in parts of 33 counties, including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Nyeri, Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru, Machakos, Makueni, Bungoma, Busia and Uasin Gishu.
Meanwhile, sunny intervals are expected in the afternoons across most parts of Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir.
Mandera to Record Highest Temperatures
The weekly forecast shows considerable temperature differences across the country, with Mandera expected to record the highest maximum temperature among the selected towns and cities at 39°C.
Lodwar follows with a maximum of 37°C, while Garissa and Wajir are each expected to reach 35°C. Kisumu and Kakamega could record maximum temperatures of 33°C and 32°C respectively.
On the cooler end, Nyahururu is expected to record a minimum temperature of 6°C, followed by Narok at 8°C and Laikipia at 9°C.
Nairobi is forecast to record a maximum temperature of 28°C and a minimum of 11°C during the period. Other selected towns include Nakuru at 28°C and 13°C, Eldoret at 26°C and 11°C, Nyeri at 26°C and 12°C, and Meru at 26°C and 11°C.
The forecast comes after KMD’s review of weather conditions between September 7 and 13 showed that most parts of the country remained dry, although rainfall was recorded notably in Busia, Kisii, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale.

Busia Ministry of Water Office recorded the highest seven-day rainfall total at 120.7mm, while Mtwapa Meteorological Station received the highest 24-hour rainfall amount of 77.1mm on September 11.
Kenya Met said the weekly forecast should be used together with its daily and five-day forecasts, with county-specific forecasts available through the respective County Directors of Meteorological Services.
