Thirteen police recruits have been charged in Nairobi for forging academic certificates to get into the National Police Service.
Prosecutors alleged at the Milimani Law Courts on Monday, April 13, that the suspects presented falsified Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) certificates to meet the minimum entry requirements for enlistment.
The court heard that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) did not issue the documents, despite them purporting to be genuine and presenting an original certificate.
The prosecution stated that the accused knowingly used forged certificates to get into police training, even though they didn’t have the required academic qualifications.
The alleged deception enabled them to bypass strict standard recruitment procedures and unlawfully join the service.

The accused jointly and fraudulently presented forged KCSE certificates, claiming they were genuine documents issued by KNEC.
The magistrate released the recruits on a Ksh500,000 bond each, with an alternative cash bail option, after they denied the charges.
Investigations continue as the case is expected to proceed to a hearing.

The charges they face include forgery, uttering false documents, and obtaining employment through fraudulent means, offences that carry significant penalties if proven guilty.
Prosecutors argued these actions undermine public service integrity and erode trust in institutions.
The case has once again brought into focus the persistent challenge of fake academic credentials in Kenya’s public sector.
Authorities are intensifying efforts to remove those using forged documents, warning that culprits will face the full force of the law.
The prosecution will present evidence against the accused at a later mention of the matter.
