33-Year-Old Boda Boda Rider Accused of Killing Son, Attempting Suicide

Gabriel Gachuhi, a 33-year-old boda boda rider, has been arrested after allegedly killing his three-year-old son in Kari-ini Village, Kiamworia, Gatundu South Constituency, Kiambu County, before attempting to take his own life.

Gatundu South Deputy Police Commander Isaac Gathiaka said the incident occurred on Tuesday night when the suspect allegedly slit the throat of his son, James Gachuhi, before attempting suicide and is currently receiving treatment at Gatundu Hospital under police guard.

He stated that Gabriel Gachuhi remains admitted to Gatundu Hospital while in police custody and will be charged with murder after he is discharged from the hospital.

Meanwhile, the body of the three-year-old has been moved to the Gatundu Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

According to the residents, Gachuhi and his wife had been separated for about six months following a domestic dispute, and the three-year-old boy had been living with his mother at her parents’ home.

They stated that on Sunday, the suspect collected the child from his in-laws’ home, but on Wednesday, the child’s grandfather reportedly arrived on a motorcycle to take the boy back to his mother’s residence.

However, before they could leave, Gabriel Gachuhi allegedly snatched the child from the motorcycle and ran back into his house with him, where he allegedly carried out the fatal attack between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm.

Neighbours further claimed that the suspect armed himself with a kitchen knife and fatally stabbed his three-year-old son in the neck before turning the weapon on himself in an apparent attempt to take his own life.

The incident follows another case currently under police investigation involving the death of 21-year-old Margaret Wambui, who allegedly fell from the 22nd floor of Altura Apartments in Upper Hill, Nairobi.

According to her family, Wambui left home at around 7 p.m. on Saturday for her hotel internship but never arrived at her workplace.

They only learnt of her whereabouts after receiving a distressing call from one of her friends later that night.

The family has ruled out suicide, maintaining that Wambui had shown no signs of emotional distress and describing her as someone whose routine largely revolved around home and work, making her death even more difficult to comprehend.

As a result, police have appealed to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding Wambui’s death.
