5 TUM Students Feared Dead After Bus Crashes in Kisumu

Five people have been confirmed dead after a bus carrying university students from Mombasa was involved in a road accident in Kisumu on Friday, August 7, 2026.

The students, who were travelling from the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), were reportedly heading to attend the burial of a fellow student, Elvis Otieno, popularly known as Comrade Beast, which is scheduled for Saturday, August 8.

Several other students were injured in the accident, with some reported to have sustained serious injuries.

Orengo Mourns TUM Students

Following the tragic accident, several leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, have sent messages of condolence to the victims’ families and the TUM community.

Orengo said he was deeply saddened by the loss of the university students in the accident along the Awasi-Ahero Highway.

“Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of several university students along the Awasi-Ahero Highway. They were travelling from Mombasa to Kisumu to pay their last respects to Elvis Otieno, alias ‘Beast’, a former student leader at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), in a journey of solidarity that ended in unimaginable grief,” Orengo said.

Nassir Sends Condolences

Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir also expressed his condolences following the accident involving the delegation travelling from Mombasa to attend Elvis Otieno’s funeral.

In a statement issued on Friday, Nassir said the bus was among five buses that had departed Mombasa carrying mourners to the funeral scheduled for Saturday.

He said preliminary information indicated that the accident occurred in Nyando, Kisumu, after the bus reportedly lost control.

Nassir said the county government had received confirmation of two fatalities and that several passengers had sustained injuries.

“Preliminary information indicates that the accident occurred in Nyando, Kisumu after the bus reportedly lost control. Regrettably, we have so far received confirmation of two fatalities,” Nassir said.

He added that ambulances had evacuated some of the injured to nearby medical facilities for assessment and treatment.

The governor said the county government was consulting with Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo and relevant security and emergency agencies responding to the accident.

“Our immediate priority is to ensure that every injured passenger receives the necessary medical attention and that the families affected are appropriately supported,” he said.

Nassir urged the TUM student fraternity and the wider Mombasa community to remain calm and avoid circulating unverified information as authorities establish the full circumstances of the accident.

“It is important that the next of kin of the deceased are formally notified before further details are made public,” he said.
