Six Killed, Five Injured After Trailer Collides Head-On With Matatu

Six people have died while five others sustained injuries after a horrific crash at Nyanja area near Mau Summit along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway.

The accident occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on July 3, 2026 when a 14-seater matatu collided head-on with a trailer, Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander John Kimutai confirmed.

The incident now adds to growing safety concerns along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway, a major transport route known for frequent accidents.

According to preliminary findings, the trailer was heading towards Nakuru when the driver lost control while navigating the Nyanja section.

The vehicle veered off its lane and crashed into the oncoming matatu, which was transporting passengers along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway.

The impact crushed the matatu, trapping passengers inside. Within minutes, emergency responders and members of the public arrived at the scene and began rescue efforts, pulling survivors from the wreckage.

Death Toll Rises to Six After Nakuru–Eldoret Highway Crash

The crash killed five people instantly, including the matatu driver. Shortly after, another victim succumbed to injuries at the hospital, raising the death toll from the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway crash to six.

Meanwhile, five injured passengers received emergency care before medics transferred them to Londiani Sub-County Hospital for further treatment. Some of the survivors remain in serious condition.

Police Outline Details of the Accident

“The accident involved a Toyota Hiace belonging to Eldoret Crossroads. It had 11 passengers on board. The fatalities are all male adults. Three people suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital. The truck driver sustained minor injuries,” Kimutai reported.

Officers have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the crash, focusing on possible factors such as speeding or mechanical failure.

Fresh Safety Concerns Along the Highway

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the Mau Summit stretch of the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway, where sharp bends and heavy traffic continue to pose risks to motorists.

As a result, authorities are now urging drivers to remain vigilant, observe traffic rules and exercise caution especially at night to prevent further loss of life along the Nakuru–Eldoret Highway.
