ODM Kicks Out Sifuna as Secretary General

Nairobi Senator and embattled Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna has been removed from the Senate Energy Committee that ODM party leader Dr Oburu Odinga chairs.

Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot announced the changes as part of a reshuffle of committee memberships in the Senate.

Moses Kajwang, the Homa Bay Senator, has been appointed to replace Sifuna on the committee.

Sifuna Removed from Energy Committee

Following the reshuffle, Sifuna will no longer sit in the influential committee responsible for oversight of matters related to the country’s energy sector.

While announcing the changes on the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot said the motion sought to reconstitute several standing committees.

“I rise to give notice of the following motion, which is a reconstitution of standing committees that, notwithstanding the resolution of the Senate made on February 12, 2025, is the approval of senators to serve in various committees,” Senator Cheruiyot announced.

He further stated: “Pursuant to standing orders 197 and 191, the Senate approves the following senators nominated by the Senate Business Committee to serve in the standing committees of the Senate.”

Apart from the changes affecting the Energy Committee, Cheruiyot also announced adjustments in other committees.

In the ICT Committee, Machakos Senator Agnes Kavindu was nominated to replace Nominated Senator Beatrice Ogolla.

Nairobi Senator’s Issue with ODM

Sifuna’s removal from the Oburu Odinga-led committee comes months after he was ousted as ODM Secretary-General, a decision he challenged at the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT).

The tribunal directed that the dispute be resolved through the parties’ internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

Despite his removal, Sifuna has maintained that he remains ODM’s Secretary-General and has dismissed the appointment of Catherine Omanyo as the party’s acting Secretary-General.

The Nairobi senator, who is associated with the Linda Mwananchi faction within ODM, has been at odds with sections of the party leadership over ODM’s cooperation with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration under the broad-based government arrangement.

Sifuna has been one of the most vocal critics of the arrangement, often expressing views that differ from those of ODM leaders who support closer collaboration with the government.
