The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged a former senior official from the Taita Taveta County Government over allegations of fraud involving Ksh 8.3 million in imprest claims for activities that are said to have never taken place.
The accused, identified as Geffrey Kimonge Mbogo, previously served as Director of Political Affairs in the county government.
He was charged before the Voi Anti-Corruption Court with offences related to fraudulent acquisition of public property and deceiving a principal.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offences occurred between November 20, 2015, and December 16, 2016.
The court was told that the accused fraudulently obtained a total of Ksh 8,303,021 from the county government through imprest warrants.
The money was reportedly claimed for official activities said to have taken place in different locations, including Dubai, Mombasa, Arusha, Nairobi, and Taita Taveta.

Prosecution’s Case in Taita Taveta Court
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Evah Kanyuira told the court that the accused knowingly applied for imprest funds for activities that were allegedly not conducted.
The prosecution argued that the claims were misleading and resulted in the unlawful acquisition of public funds.
Mbogo denied all charges when he appeared before the court.
The court ordered that he be released on a cash bail of Ksh 1,000,000 or an alternative bond of Ksh 2,000,000.

Wider Pattern of County-Level Corruption Cases
The Taita Taveta case comes amid a continued wave of anti-corruption prosecutions targeting county governments across Kenya.
In June 2026, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) reported several arrests and court appearances involving county officials accused of bribery, abuse of office, and fraudulent payments.
For instance, a Uasin Gishu County lands officer was recently charged over allegations of demanding a bribe in exchange for facilitating land subdivision services.
In Nairobi, the County Chief Officer was recently arrested and suspended following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over alleged irregular payments and abuse of office.
The officer was linked to questionable procurement approvals and is expected to face formal charges in court.
Case Set for Pre-Trial
The matter will be mentioned again on July 1, 2026, for pre-trial directions.
