Kenya Railways has confirmed that a freight train operated by Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd caught fire at Simba Station.
According to a public notice dated July 1, 2026, the corporation stated that the Magadi train developed a fire after mechanical damage affected the locomotive’s fuel tank.
Consequently, the damage triggered fuel leakage and sparking, which ignited the blaze.
Immediately after the fire broke out, the agency dispatched emergency response teams to the scene and coordinated closely with the train’s operator to contain the situation.
“Kenya Railways Management is in contact with Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd. We have dispatched a team to the site and are working closely with the company to support the response,” the notice stated.
At the same time, the corporation continues to assess the extent of the damage while securing the affected section of the railway line. However, it has not yet confirmed whether the incident caused injuries or significant losses.

Meanwhile, technical teams are conducting detailed on-site assessments, focusing on both the locomotive and surrounding infrastructure to determine the root cause of the fire.
“Kenya Railways and Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd are working closely together to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the notice added.
As the probe continues, the corporation has pledged to provide updates, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and accountability.
Key Freight Route Affected
Notably, the Magadi railway line plays a vital role in freight transport, especially in the movement of industrial minerals such as soda ash. Therefore, the disruption could affect logistics operations linked to industrial supply chains.

Even as authorities respond to the incident, Kenya continues to roll out major railway development projects. Kenya Railways has now officially commenced construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Narok County, marking a significant milestone in the country’s transport expansion.
The KES 700 billion project moves into the construction phase following its launch by President William Ruto on March 18, 2026. This transition from launch to active works signals renewed momentum after years of funding delays and route planning.
Once complete, the railway line will link Kenya to the Ugandan border, significantly boosting regional trade and freight movement across East Africa.
In addition, Kenya Railways continues to upgrade the Nairobi commuter rail network through electrification, introduce new trains and revamp older metre gauge lines to improve both passenger and cargo transport.
