Kenya Railways Set to Launch Electric Trains for Nairobi Commuters

Kenya Railways has launched an ambitious plan to transform Nairobi’s commuter rail system through the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP) in partnership with the World Bank.
The project targets faster, cleaner, and more efficient rail services while aligning transport systems with land use planning across the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and key commuter corridors.
“The project objective is to improve urban mobility within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and land use planning along the identified commuter corridors,” the notice stated.
Kenya Railways Major Upgrade Plans
To begin with, the project outlines high-impact developments that will reshape mobility across Nairobi and its surrounding regions through modern rail infrastructure and integrated transport systems.
Key components include:
- Development of the Nairobi Central Station – Thika Commuter Line to strengthen connectivity between the city and satellite towns.
- Electrification of the Nairobi commuter railway network to deliver faster, more reliable, and environmentally friendly train services.
- Acquisition of modern trainsets, including electric and diesel multiple units, to increase capacity and efficiency.
- Construction of maintenance workshops and manufacturing units to support long-term railway operations.
- Development of access roads and multimodal transfer facilities to improve last-mile connectivity.
- Establishment of Transit-Oriented Developments to integrate transport infrastructure with urban growth.
Notably, the electrification of the Nairobi Commuter Railway Network marks a critical step toward modernizing Kenya’s rail transport system and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel-based mobility options.
Stakeholder Engagement
Meanwhile, Kenya Railways Corporation has moved to involve private sector players through a consultative engagement aimed at shaping project implementation and procurement strategies.
“Kenya Railways Corporation hereby invites interested private sector stakeholders and industry players to a consultative meeting on June 24, 2026,” the notice confirmed.
The meeting will take place at the Railway Training Institute in South B, Nairobi, providing a platform for direct engagement between government agencies and industry stakeholders.
Consultation Objectives
At the same time, the engagement will guide decision-making by collecting critical insights from the market and aligning stakeholders with project expectations and delivery strategies.
The meeting will focus on:
- Sharing detailed project information with industry players and potential investors.
- Presenting procurement packages and clear implementation strategies.
- Collecting feedback on design, sustainability, and overall feasibility.
- Evaluating pricing trends, market conditions, and supply chain risks.
- Identifying innovative technologies and alternative solutions in the sector.

Participation Guidelines
Finally, stakeholders must confirm participation early to secure involvement in the consultative process and contribute to shaping the project’s direction and implementation roadmap.
“To confirm your attendance and facilitate online participation, interested parties are requested to email: procure@krc.co.ke by 1700hrs EAT of June 21 2026,” the notice stated.
Participants will engage in non-binding discussions strictly for consultation, while Kenya Railways will later conduct procurement through a transparent and competitive process.
